Squeek at start up and over bumps

Featured Replies

It's been a while since i've had to ask anything

I got a squeek when starting the car' not all the time it sounds like a fan belt slipping. It also does it when going over bumps but isn't as loud then (due to engine noise maybe). It sometimes does it when pulling off after reversing

I first thought rad mounts but it aint that as when i wiggle my rad the noise aint there altough my mounts are shot (need to sort)

It's starting to get on my nerves now so any help would be greatly appreciated

My aux belt used to slip, From the looks of it you would have said it was a good un.

A new one sorted problem out. Could it be this?

I suppose it could be but what about when i'm going over humps ???

I'm sure it's the same squeek in both circumstances

That was a quick reply thanks

Front ARB bushes?

IIRC the Octy has an auxilliary drivebelt tensioner.

It certainly does. You say the car does it from startup ,does it do it when stood too?

Not from cold as such just as and when it feels like it really

Had the bushes and bar changed about a year ago maybe 20K miles back how long do they last nowadays

I just had a thought it wouldnt be the exhaust mounts would it ????

it sounds like rubber squeeking to me

If it's a rubber squeak, and not the radiator mounts, try bounce-testing each corner, with a view to finding a dry suspension bush.

Thanks ken would this squeek when starting the car though

Not normally, but the alternative is probably a weak aux drivebelt tensioner, and I'd expecct that to squeak on startup or sudden sharp changes in throttle, rather than over bumps.

Anyone got any more ideas

A mate of mine had the same issue in his RS. We spent days at the Skoda dealership with the mechanics and the car on the lift.

The squeak came when picking up the car in first gear, and on bumps. Not always though.

Finally traced to the transmission mounting.

I would suggest checking that as well as the engine mountings...

Took us long enough to find the sound....

best of luck....

No i checked the hamsters, gerbils and guinea pigs all accounted for

Grab your radiator and give it shake.

I had my radiator mounts changed and this sorted my squeeking over bumps and shutting the doors.

Hi this is my first post so Hi to all of you!

I've recently bought a Octavia vRS from 2003 (on the 03).

It's been driven very 'conservatively' pretty much it's whole life - motorway miles and never brisk I suspect!

Now I had the car for a couple of days and it definitely did get a thrashing and I developed what I called 'squeeky wheel syndrome'. It was squeeking when I turned left initially I think. Then when I was free wheeling eg. when I have the clutch down changing gear. Also I realised recently that it was really only when the car was hot.

Here's what really happened imho;

There is a plate about midships under the car which is welded to the exhaust tube and bolted to the underbody.

Now this is what was squeeking - the little 20mm bit of metal, on one side of the exhaust tube. It broke on mine (basically it was rusted through). The original squeeks were from this flexing while it was ok, then it breaks and then it gets more squeeky and can sound proper broken (metal on metal knock sound time to time ((say over cobbles!))).

I took it to a garage and looked from the pit and found the above.

I'm going to get the garage to weld the bloody thing back together or I'll cough up and get the whole exhaust unit changed to something else at volkscraft (or maybe just weld in a scaffolding pole instead :) )

If anyone can confirm I'm interested. I was thinking the squeek was from the wheels - eg the idea that it was a stone or something in the caliper or break disc.

Regards

Funny you mention the exhaust bracket mine was done last week

No more squeeks (till the next time at least)

Did you replace the exhaust or just get them to sort that bit?
