Well, I've survived a few months now with only the 18-55 lens that came with my Canon 400D... but I'm feeling the need for a bit more flexibility, so another lens is in order

you could combine the telephoto and macro in one and go for a Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro Lens (theres also a similar tamron version). Its not a true macro in that it doesnt do 1:1 but it will get up close to stuff at 300m. Its also not an overly fast lens in that its a 4-5.6 but you only really need a fast lens for motorsport when youre taking in low light.

generally you tend to leave the camera on shutter priority and keep it around 1/320th sec (or below) for panning as this keeps the wheels moving. In this case you dont need a fast lens as your using smaller F stops. If you have the shutter speed much higher then youll end up with stationary wheels and the car looks like its parked as I found out on my first visit to Oulton park

1/1000th sec @ F4.5 - wheels fairly stationary

1/160th @ F10 - wheels spinning

Hi Caz, I got the Tamron 70-300mm thrown in with my DSLR and was surprised how decent it is. Subsequently I have read 2 multi lens tests in Camera magazines and the Tamron came out top, beating the Sigma too. I would normally say go for a Sigma over a Tamron, but not in this case and the Tamron is only about
