The Workshop Manual Elsawin Shows The New Oil Being Filled Via The Drain Plug Anyone Know Why You Cant Fill New Oil In From The Filter Housing At The Top Of Gearbox.

Because you need the engine running to set the level and you cant do that with the oil filter housing off.

There is a special tool that connects to the 1 litre bottes of DSG oil and connects to the bottom of the gearbox to fit it up.

What If You Connected Up The Oil Filter Housing After Filling With New Oil , Then Start Engine. With Vag -com Connected When Temp Gets To 35-45 The Oil Should Find Its Own Level By Coming Out The Overflow Tube. Screw In Drain Plug --job Done.

You could I suppose put the initial 5.5 litres in to start with but your not really achieving anything as you woud still need to connect up the tube underneath to check/top up the level.

i managed to make a fill hose out of plumbing bits. purchased a gearbox drain plug from dealer drilled & taped plug, connected to a piece of hose with valve to a tank connector on top of gear oil bottle --- guaranteed no leaks [being a plumber comes in handy sometimes].

So you have everything you need anyhow.

If Gearbox Holds 5l & You Pour In 5.5l, When Temp Is Within 35-45, The Oil Should Find The Correct Level By Flowing Out Overflow Therefore No Need To Connect Tube Just Reconnect Drain Plug .

The gearbox holds 7 litres from empty, its just you never know how much has drained out.

This is all assuming you could put five litres down the oil filter housing as its pretty awkward to get in there as it is and im not sure how the filter housing works. I think the oil is pumped up around the filter housing so I dont think its a staight drop into the gearbox from there.

I Take Your Point, I Will Do It The Correct Way & Use The Fill Hose.

It would seem the easy thing to do being as you have made the filling device, its not something you really want to get wrong as the boxes aint cheap to replace.

Also i'm not 100% but VW stipulate for warranty purposes the DSG oil and filter must be changed to keep the warranty on the geartbox. Now in theory this would follow the same regulations as all other servicing so would have to be done by a VAT registered garage with suitable documentation to support it.

Had to insist on having mine done: it's a lease (company) car: lease co (Lex) were ok about it, but garage didn't know that NOT doing it would void the warranty....... garage staff well impressed when I told them it was on this site!

Well it stands to reason really doesnt it. If a manufacturer says you musrt change the oil and filter at 40k and you dont then they arent going to pay for a new box are they? No more than if you decide not to change your engine oil and it seizes up they aint going to pay for a new engine.

OK, I've got the "filling up tubey thing",filter oil ect, I hav'nt got a VAGCOM, but that seems only to check the temperature fr this job.

Does the oil expand so much that temperature is vital ?.

If the DSG is in N surely it wont be producing any heat itself (no parts moving),so does the heat come by convection through the bell houseing from the engine ?.

If the DSG is still warm and the oil was bought up to 40c (maybe by waterbath) before it was put in would that "do the trick" ?.

Thoughts anyone ?.

The temperature is vital and very important.

The fill tube in the bottom of the gearbox is a certian length to set the level at a speciific temperature (35-45 degrees). The temp quickly goes up as the level has to be set with the engine running and the gearbox in 'P'.

I have a question regards the interval of changing the oil for the manual gearbox and is it more simple than the dsg one?

the gear oil level changes with the gearbox oil temperature. checking oil level when temp is too high may result in under filling and checking when temp is too low may result in over filling . vag -com is needed to check temp accurately.

OK So I got a VagCom ect, gearbox was level (even used a spirit level to check !!),when I removed the drain plug one litre,at least, of fluid drained out before I removed the syphon tube thingy, followed all the instructions exactly ect. That was 25,000 miles ago, no problems yet so must have done it right. But, WHY did 1 lt of fluid come out before the syphon was removed, do they overfill the box at the factory or what ?.:confused:

I am a bit confused with the temp of the oil being critical and the filling tube etc. Could I not get away by doing this:- cold gearbox drain the oil via the drain nut, measure the amount of oil drained, replace with exactly the same amount of oil. Feed new oil through the oil dip stick, might be slow but at least you save a lot of hassle. ps I am not a mechanic I just hate garages. What spec is the ATF oil vw code?

How often do you (or someone who knows what they are doing) have to do this? I have done 40,000 miles and not touched it.

I think the oil should be changed at 40k, mind you mine is on 65k and I don't think no one has touched it.

DSG oil should be changed every 40,000, and the gearbox oil filter.

Our taxi firm has a mixed fleet, the Vectra and 406 manual boxes seem to go bang at about 100,000,Skoda at about 150,000,am convinced that if manual box oil was changed at about 50,000 or 60,000 miles they would last longer. My Octavia mk 2 is nearly a year old and has now done 75,000, so nearly time for another DSG oil change (and cam belt,tensioner ect and while I'm at it I'll change the other belt and tensioner, oh joy, I love working on cars )
