Sudden MASSIVE improvement in mpg

Featured Replies

In the last few months I have started seeing a huge improvement in my mpg (according to the trip computer). When I first got the car I was lucky to see 44mpg, but I think that was partly my bad for driving it like a tool while getting used to it.

It evened out at about 45mph, which I was happy with.

But lately the car refuses to get less than 50mpg... I don't think my driving has changed much since I got used to the car.

Anyone got any idea why that might be? AMD map left on, engine about to hit 50k.

Tyres getting a bit worn and giving less resistance?

MPM :D

Don't diesel engines only start to open up and function to their potential at around 40-50k..... not sure what effect this would have on mpg though!

It's the Essex air!

[Mine just got a 30k service, and is running around 3/4 better mpg..]

You must have slowed down :P

Clock it properly. Brim it fill to fill and check if it really is getting it. The MFD lies more than a bathroom scales.

On all the diesels I've owned, the MPG got gradually better throughout the time I owned them. It wasn't a sudden increase but a very gradual one.

Is that the MPG as measured from the trip computer?

I struggle to get less than 45mpg these days (51k), when I used to have to try hard to better 43 or 44. And that's in Summer, when it's always a little worse due to the warmer temperatures.

Sure, this is off the trip meter, but unless that 'slips' over time, it's going to be no more inaccurate than when I bought it so the mpg ought to be improving, even if the actual figures aren't correct!

I think I detected something of a step-change after the 50k oil change, but that could just be my imagination. Or down to something like having the air filter cleared out at the same time, or the petrol station switching suppliers...

Thing is that involves counting and stuff... because I normally jam it full of fuel - the over flow bit as well as holding the nozel slightly out on the fuel hole.

I maybe doing more motorway miles now, but it still seems like too much of an improvement! I got 54mph over a 30 miles trip - that's way too high

Which phantom warm summer is this?

Rob.

Good point, well made - especially considering what it was like in April! ;):D

Less hills in Essex than Devon!

stop complaining about excessive fuel consumption :P

the fact you are doing more motorway miles is probably the main reason for the better fuel consumption , stop/start town driving kills the figures , sat there engine running going nowhere using fuel

I experience the same phenomenon.

0-10kkm consumption 10~11l/100km (all consumptions in city)

10kkm - remap

10-20kkm 9~10l/100km

20-30kkm 8~9l/100km

and now at 31kkm its 7.5-8.5l/100km in city driving.

I stick this to the fact that the engine break-in lasts as long as 60kkm.

I guess there are a lot less, but is it going to make that much difference?

I am driving it a lot less, but that means when I do drive it I am a total ar5e.

I got 55mpg on the way home accelerating between 65 to 90mph for about 30 miles.

Nah, all the police are picketing outside Stansted Airport... saw a marked up Evo

Doesnt take me 30 miles to get up to 90 from 60, and that's with the 'limp mode' :P ;)

curses! was just about to make a sarky in-gear acceleration comment :D

Sussed it EE

Defo found the reasons.

1/ You took the handbrake off.

2/ You found the 'xtras' i.e. 5th and 6th gear.

Some other factors :-

As most are saying - motorway driving

and also, compared to winter (for example), there should be an improvement as winter diesel is being used which has a lower calorific value - additionally the car will be getting up to the correct operating temperature more rapidly.

New tyres / checked pressures - less reisitance.

It took you 30 miles to get to 90?

When did you get an SDI?

Mine's usually better in the summer.

Every year, about June/July, the MPG goes up, maybe the engine reaches operating temperature earlier.

I'm still getting regular readouts of 65mpg on my commute, and on longer flatter journies. Got one of 72mpg going home from Golf last night, but that's slightly cheating as the starting point is about 250m above sea level and the route is very "coasting/cruising" friendly.

Currently at 200 miles on this tank and the gauge is reading 3/4 full - It will go down fast at the end, but it's nice to know I can get an easy 600 out of a tank, but always need to factor than about
