Can only agree. 35hp for a Fiver sounds much more promising. :D

I believe the 1.7 unit does have some ties with Yamaha, as does the 1.6 motor in the original Focus.

As is the 1.25 Zetec, all developed with Yamaha. Good engines but you have to watch the oil like a hawk (Expensive synthetic stuff too!).

At least you won't look queer driving a vrs.

Puma was a fabulous little car.

OK, not that rapid and nowhere near the grunt of a 130ps 1.9pd, but the handling, steering, brakes, interior and gearshift are still streets ahead of a standard Fabia VRS.

At the end of the day, they are different cars for different applications; we would not have bought a VRS if the wife wasn't doing a 25,000 mile a year commute. We both love it to bits, mind you!

I personally rate it much higher than any of the Ford 'boxes I've used.

I've got two and I can assure you that in overall terms, the Puma change was better, in fact probably better than on any car I've had. Shift is quicker on the Elise (short shift 6 speed Vag box), but not better.

Not sure I agree with that to be honest. The Puma has no head room, the dashboard is taken from a mid 90's Fiesta (where the passenger side of the dash is about 8 feet away from you) and it feels cheap. It rattles like mad, the speakers are poor and the seats don't support you at all round bends. Considering it handles fairly well, the seats don't do the job of holding you in place. They need bigger side bolsters really.

A colleague used to have a Puma when I had my Octavia Elegance. he used to get in the way on the way to work. We all know the Octavia Elegance is faster than a Fabia VRS so I suggest the Puma and Fabia would be evenly matched.

Now leather recaro's would be nice. There's one issue sorted straight away. I'd imagine you sit lower in those too thus giving more head room. There's 2 x issues gone. :D

Mate of mine's has 40k on now and feels like it's got 80k on. It's not aging well even though it's his pride and joy. It's serviced at a dealer on time and he polishes it every weekend. BUT, and this is a big but.....he knows nothing about cars technically. What lies under the bonnet is a mystery to him and he's never held a spanner in his life. Perhaps that would be a help.

The main issue with the Fabia interior is that it's so boring. All black and squared off. Sure it feels well made (and is a doddle to take to bits etc) but it's so depressing.

i used to own a 1.7 puma and cant agree with some of the comments posted.

The Gearshift was fantastic (cant comment on a Furby as havent driven one). The engine was fantastic too. yes you had to drive it hard to get the best out of it but it was still very good and i put 76000 miles on it and never had a problem with the engine. As for handling it was great aswell and on the twistys it could keep up with far more able cars. The Speakers were very good (often had music on fairly loud) and never had any bass rattle or anything like that. As for rattles i had the car for nearly 3 years and it never developed any rattles at all.

:rofl: When I first bought my Fabia. I took it back to the dealers 2 weeks old, as this rattle had developed at the back. Didn't stop! Back to the Dealers. Test drove it! Did it rattle?

1.7 is a good engine apparently. Roots in speedboats I'm led to believe. I'm going to say it would be a tie between a standard vRS and a standard puma 1.7 to 60mph. 30 to 80 would depend on what gear. I would think it would be fairly even if the vRS started in 3rd, and the puma in 2nd. The puma would get away a bit quicker having more revs, and the vRS would need to build some boost but would catch up in the 60+ area.

Now, what about a civic type R from 30 to ??? up a 1 in 8 gradient. Not that I'd know after tonight. ;)

When i was a kid at college 18/19, I always dreamt that my first car would be a ford puma...used to request for its brochure and collect pics of it from magazines etc...but then before i could finish uni, find a job and save a bit of dough from a career....they discontinued it....F**k sake and I still could'nt afford a 2nd hand one!

Anyway, I've never owned a brand spanking car from new before till I got this VRS SE 2 weeks ago...I'd still get a Puma if they ever re-released a new generation of them.. but VRS

as a first car has given me so much joy!

Anyway that was a bit random and has nothing to do with puma vs vrs... but it brought back memories.

Mate of mine followed me in his Puma when I took my car to Seat Surgeons to be pimped up in order to give me a lift to work. We were both giving it some stick and the gap did gradually widen between us, even on the lovely twisty Towton Moor road between Garforth and York. He does the Harewood Hill Climb too on a regular basis so does know what he's doing. I think the car just lacks a little bit of power but is a fine piece of kit in terms of handling. The ride is a bit harsh though.....very crashy, and that's compared to the vRS which is far from perfect.

The biggest thing for him (where the gap widened at it's quickest) were hills. The vRS just bombed up them whereas the Puma needed to be wound up which took a little longer.

Wasn't it the Steve McQueen advert that was used on the Puma years ago?

The one from Bullett....
