Tire Pressures

Featured Replies

I decided to check my tire pressures for the first time last night (Oct Elegance 4k miles) the dealer had all 4 tires at 40psi! i lowered the pressure to 31 psi all round is that correct?

This happened to me when I picked my Octavia last year. I thought the ride was a bit harsh and when I checked the pressures, all four tyres were well over 40psi.

No wonder all my fillings fell out!

The correct pressure for 16 inch alloys is 2.2 bar front and rear which equates to about 32psi.

..... but why did you wait 4,000 miles before you checked your pressures?

Ideally they should be checked, say, once a week together with the engine oil, coolant, lights/indicators etc. etc. and certainly before any long journey (adjusting for load of course).

Yes the dealer is wrong, I too have had over inflated tyres by a dealer (on a Roomster demo as it happens), BUT its your car and your liability to keep it roadworthy.

Agreed, but they should be spot on initially, when they come from the dealer, just as you should be able to take for granted that the oil and water are right, the headlights properly adjusted etc.

After you have taken over the car of course we should check around weekly, say, if possible.

I'd say theres some difference in handling.

Yes there is quite a difference in handling, i know i should have checked before now but we all know how it is, young baby to look after etc

Handling better isn't it? Well done, bit of 'humble pie' never hurt anyone.;)

but how many drivers are there out on the roads who DONT EVER bother to check their tyre pressures - its frightening.

I think the most imporatant thing about regular [i.e. weekly] tyre checking is that it is often the first sign you get that there is a bl**dy great screw stuck in one of them!

If you have just been pottering around town for the last few days, the handling difference doesn't always show up, even with quite a bit of air loss.

Three tyres all nicely set at 2.2 bar, the fourth is 1.5 and you know you are in trouble.

I recently took delivery of my Octy (see sig for detail) and the pressures were set to 2.7 bar (front) and 2.4 bar (rear) instead of 2.1 and 2.0 (correct figures for various wheel/tyre combinations are inside fuel flap). This was straight from the supplying dealer who supposedly performed a PDI. Makes you wonder what else they get wrong...

My oct vrs estate arrived with 30psi in 2 of them, 26 psi in one and 47psi in the other, blindingly obvious that they did not check the tyre pressures during the PDI (wouldnt know if they were supposed to).

I feel that this was down right dangerous, i mean who checks there tyre pressures on the forecourt before driving away??? I checked mine when i got home 100 miles away:eek: . I phoned my dealer and played merry hell with them, they sent me some free luggage nets for the boot  as an apologie.

You did well; wish I could get some luggage nets!!

Erm, and I hope you weren't using this car to drive around your baby with dangerously over-inflated tyres... I'm in the same boat and check my tyres etc even more frequently than usual now that I have a baby to look after and drive around safely ;)

By the sounds of it your baby would be at the doctors if it sneezed! ;)

when mine was a baby she had spanners and screwdrivers to hand and was shown how to fix and maintain a car ;)

I must have been lucky! Having had my 2.0l Elegance for one week I checked the tyres yesterday.and they were spot on!

Amazing - who was your dealer?
