One for the mechanics, please...

Featured Replies

OK - I want to know a simple yes/no, and anything else that will help.

Basically, everyone knows I have a PD100 engine laying around doing sod all at the moment, and am thinking I may make more money if I were to put this engine into another car which has seized up.

I may have found a good donor car. It's a 1997 TDI SE Seat Toledo which looks to have been used as a taxi, but the engine seized 3 years ago at 200K miles. The car is nice looking (for a seat with 200K done)

Its fly by wire which I think is handy given how the throttle works in the Fabia. So if I can get this car for

Will there be any problems with insurance if the car has had an engine transplant?

Good question, but that's not for me to worry about as I'll never be insuring it myself. :D Its just the mechanical side of things I'm curious about at the moment... Think I may make a couple of K out of this if it works out well.

I take it that it is the previous generation Toledo, in which case it has the Mk3 golf platform underneath. The mounting points for the enging/gearbox shoiuld be similar if not the same so so it should be fairly easy to adapt your engine to fit in it. As it uses the same drive by wire system in the fabia, that part is already sorted and it will just be the connecting up that will be the problem.

You will have to tell the DVLA of the engine change and supply them with the engine number for their records. After that it is just the work that would be needed for it to pass its MOT.

Woos! :D :P Got a bit of a stutter there too...

isnt 1997 pre-PD?

in which case you may have problems with fuelling... tank, fuel pump etc

Saleability issues...

old shape Toledo is based on the 90bhp TDI.. so there might be issues putting a 100bhp PD motor in.. Also the old shape Seat don't really hold there value...

I would not bother.. more hassle than reward...

Jason,

Have you tried looking for a dead fabia that could take the donor organ? :D

No dead Fabias / Octys about that I've found...

These 1997 TDI Toledos do still go for around

I've been slightly put off this idea now. The car itself looks to be in bad shape. From a piccie I can see the boot isn't lining up properly with the surrounding bodywork.

Still not sure about the engine though? :D

Jason - have you advertised the engine on TDiclub and the Dieselcar forums?.. just a thought..

I've put an ad on dieselcar.com and can't remember my password for TDIclub..

But then, it is a Seat... ;)

Old Golf would probably be a better donor, as people generally like Golfs...

Rob.
