Featured Replies

hi folks

a local garage has put ford formula e 5w-30 api sl apea a1/b1 in my vrs

is it gonna bust into a pile of pistons ? or will it do they reckon its fine

no vw specs on bottle but wouldnt been fords own brand (its for the lastest ford engines

any advice would help thanks my wife taken off on a 200 mile trip dohhh

It should still have specs on it that you can compair with your normal oil..... if it's used in the focus ST for example, I'm sure it would be fine in a vRS....

Was it a back street garage so to speak or was it a reputable garage, i must be honest with you if i had a oil change done and the oil was not vag spec i would have gone into one and had it out with them there and then but thats just the way i am :D . I am sure it will be okay for a short trip of that distance but i would deff look into it further and do not be fobbed of with there crap:thumbup:

yeh thats the the stuff

they didnt do a oil change so to speak they just topped up my oil from min mark to max mark when they finished doing my cambelt/tensionors

ive used this garage since i started driving and go up to the owners house to get razzed friday nights so putting new oil in is not problem i can just use his 4 poster and diy

just wanted to no if theres any point

If it's 5W-30 there's no good reason why it won't be fine, especially if it's just a top-up.

Rob.

:iagree: - If you're really worried, treat the next oil change as being for fixed interval servicing even if you're on variable.

In the manual, it says you can use a certain amount of any grade of oil to top up, although I can't remember whether it's 0.5l or 1.0l. I think min-to-max is something like 0.5l, so you ought to be OK. I think there's also something in there about ACEA xx oil being acceptable if nothing else is available, but I can't remember the grade...

HTH

Unless she's bouncing the engine off the rev limiter all the time I wouldn't worry about it - the existing oil will dilute it and the specs listed above are probably within the VW specification anyway.

Now if it was 2-stroke oil they topped it up with...

Why do people think that oil is required to be made by the manufacturer? Which VW group oil refinery is it going to come from anyway?!!#*/!

God's sake!!!

The manufacturers create their own specs so that gullibles will pay through the nose for products branded as theirs (oil, wash/wax/polish etc), yet it will have come from the same refinery as many other brands. The specification that matters is the API one - this is the universal one and SL (for petrol engines from 2001 - when it was introduced) is entirely suitable for all cars. There is a newer (SM) spec, introduced in 2004, but it is very rare in oils on sale yet. For diesel vehilces the API latest in use is generally CF, thought here is anew one CJ, for low emission diesel engines and CG for severe use diesles (industrail normally). Many oils have both S and C specs and so are suitable for petrol and diesel engines.

PS I have never come across the Ford oil refinery either.............
