HU fitting trouble - too many wires

Featured Replies

Got my new HU delivered today and have just tried fitting it.

HU is Pioneer DEH-P65BT

Car is mk1 Octy vrs

I cannot for the life of me get it all the way in. What with the iso adapter, Aerial adapter, and bundle of wires that came with the HU, which includes bulky fuses and connection boxes.

I have taken the glove box out, but still cannot get my hands far enough in to sort it out.

Any suggestions?

I have 1 idea but need to check something with you guys first.

The iso adapter (PC2-69-4). Is it correct that all this is doing for me is reversing the constant and permanent 12v feeds? If so the bundle of wires that came with the HU has the male and female connections for these wires which can be switched over, and in doing this would make the iso adapter redundant?

My other concern is this 'k' wire? If I'm not using the adapter do I need to do anything with this? And which wire is it?

Thanks in advance

Rob

I don't like those autoleads adaptors - just swap the lives.

Also you might get more room if you drop the glove box and pull the wires through.

I had this in my fabia. I ended up removing the centre air vent and sticking a hand down to ease the wiring up and over the head unit as it went back. Worked though, as it went flush back without any real shoving required. :)

Quick update,

I've managed to get it in, had to push quite hard, enough to make me whince a bit, but it's in. I might take it out when I get some time and have another go as I'm not sure I haven't damaged anything important!

I took the autoleads adapter off and just switched the red and yellow.

All thats left now is to figure out the best way to run the speaker wire for the bluetooth and put the glove box back on.

Dunnno if anyone's interested but I'll take a couple of pics when its done too.

Oh and on a side note, it sounds so much better than the original one :)

Thanks guys

I would be carefull you've not trapped anything behind it.

The pioneer leads have a pair of butt connectors in them to swap the lives anyway, so you really don't need the audioleads kit for that.

If you unscrew the glovebox on the MKI Octy, there is bags of room to the rear side of the radio where you could put the wires. Just be careful taking the box out of the lead ot the glovebox light.

I've just replaced my head unit too. I highly recommend taking out the glove box.

This is really easy, you'll need the correct size torx key to remove the 3 screws underneath and the 2/3 inside the box. Be careful when removing the box to disconnect any lighting and airconditioning connections running to it.

Once that is done, you can gently move and coax the wires down further into gaps in the centre console. The wires wont be trapped behind the head unit. It will take time and patience (plus a few scratches to hands) but it is worth it.

There is also a hole on the driver side to hide a wire or two. Definitely make use of that if possible.

Trying to force stuff in will only lead to damage. I learnt from that mistake years ago.

Yes, removing the glovebox on the mk1 is the way to get all those wires back in. Once out you can get behind the headunit as you are pushing it back and organise the wires so that they are on the side of the HU. Just be carefull with the glovebox light wiring.

My Mk1, and using an auto leads carkit ISO, I found push it through the hole in the back left of the DIN hole.

Depending on the lead, you should have enough length to do this and be able to get you hand in whilst holding the radio. Then when pushing in, the wires and weight of the lead should guide itself in the recess for you.
