Random electrical 'features'

Featured Replies

Hi all...

I have been lurking for a while and decided it was time to sign up and start asking dumb questions! ;) I have done some searches on here and can't find answers on exactly what I am after so here goes.

I own a 2000 Octavia 1.8SLXI (none-turbo) and there are a few electrical niggles which hopefully someone may have seen before.

1. The courtesy lights in the boot do not always go out when the boot is closed (where are the switches for this?)

2. My temperature gauge has given up completely and now doesn

Well, I've been signed up a while, so I'm going to post some dumb answers... ;)

1. Not sure...I don't remember seeing any of those "push switches" like they use on doors...

2. Sounds like the temperature sender has gone. I've had mine done under warranty, but they only take about 10 minutes doing it, so I suspect it's not too hard.

3. I take it you mean when you use the key in the lock, rather than remote central locking? I find my locks don't all pop up when the battery is drained, but my car also won't start when it's in this state...

4. Sounds like possibly a loose connection to the back of the switch?

Golf Mk4 manual will have certain similarities - definitely worth getting an owner's manual though, as that will tell you things which Haynes might not...and it tells you how to reset the service indicator on page 64, but unfortunately I don't have my manual to hand to check what this actually involves... :)

Rob.

The boot switch is built into the lock and was a known problem on some older Octavias. If you have a boot switch that fails so the boot light stays on then the car will 'think' that it's not locked so the central locking will behave in odd ways.

On an Octavia Estate I had, I replaced the boot switch with a pin switch. I'm afraid I can't remember how I did it because it was 4 years ago.
