Knocking noise Fabia vRS

Featured Replies

Is this familiar to any of you guys.

There's a knocking noise coming from the front which sounds like something heavy is loose and striking something solid. There is no consistency of when it is likely to occur. Over certain undulating/rough surfaces the knocking can be heard while others, which seem no different, there is no evidence.

One significant aspect is consistent: the knocking ceases completely when in neutral and freewheeling. That tends to suggest that the source is not the suspension, I guess.

Could the ASR be contributory? What about the DMF?

dogbone mount?

Engine mount maybe, if it doesn't happen when you're freewheeling. Not that you sohuld of course on the open road :nono: ;):D

I'd expect the dogbone mount to make the noise when applying/ taking away power, changing gear and when freewheeling, not the other way round to be honest.

Sound to me like ARB bushes. Is there a clunk if you dab the brakes at all too?

Jack the car up and have a look at where the front anti roll bar is held onto the front subframe. Also have a look at the drop links which bolt onto the end of the antiroll bar and also attach to the front strut.

i have replaced almost everything on the front suspension on my VRS , and it still knocks occasionally ,

if you are really concerned i would get it to the dealers and get them to check the front suspension out thoroughly , but front ARB bushes , console bushes or rool bar links are known to cause knocks

Update:

Dealer's engineer brought a courtesy car, 56 plate vRS and test drove that and my car, 54 plate vRS, over the same route. He acknowledged right away that there was something not quite right with my car. Said he hadn't heard that sort of "knock" before. So, you can imagine his reaction when the courtesy car, over the self same route, produced an identical sounding "knock".

Any way, moving on. I've since been informed that they have modified the gearbox mounting on my car - will find out tomorrow precisely what that entailed - and after a pretty comprehensive test drive the "knock" is no longer.

Well, I'm uplifting tomorrow and looking forward to clonk-free motoring. I'll advise on the detail of the mod at the earliest opportunity.

Modified mount..............................think that involves a small amount of grease

Did mine last month and now its as silent as a vrs can be ;)

Gearbox mountings have been known to fail/wear, as have dogbone mounts (go weak when remapped) and the usual droplinks and wishbone bushes... all can cause knocking and sloppyness

:iagree:

Should get mine checked over when I get back again - getting some nocking noises too and it sounds bigger than the engine cover :(

I need to do this too me thinks....... ;)

Gonna have the console bushes replaced too as they're on their last legs.....the odd bit occasional creaking and stuff over speed bumps.

sorry for sounding stupid what are console bushes i know about all the other bushes but this 1 is new to me

AFAIK, they're just called that because they attach the front console to the suspension arms. I think 'console' is just another name for 'subframe' in this instance, and it's just to differentiate them from any of the other bushes that make up the suspension...

But could be wrong... :o

I put a similar post on here a couple of weeks back and got no definate answer so I went to my dealer and it turned out that there is a rubber pad on the bonnet by the bonnet hinges on either side that were making the knocking noise the cure was just a dab of grease on each of these bits of rubber. If you need more information i can get you a picture.

On Saturday I collected my car from Henry's Skoda, Glasgow, and over all kinds on surfaces I'm pleased to report that there is no longer any evidence of the previously reported knocking from the front end.

The modification, if you can call it that, involved the application of silicone grease to the gearbox mounting. Simple as that. (In fact one of you guys had already sussed this and posted a thread). The dealer's engineer showed me the SkodaUK instruction sheet which had been circulated throughout the dealer network, so, if any of you guys have a similar knocking you can inform your local dealer of the existence of this instruction sheet.

In addition, Henry's arranged for a new alloy - original was showing signs of bubbling - and a new back cover for the driver's seat - the original had fuzz on the RH bolster - under warranty. Brilliant service. A few weeks ago, the same request of Park's, Hamiton, met with no joy!

Hi there,

You are spot-on. That was the fix at Henry's Skoda, Glasgow. Has worked a treat.

Just goes to show how a different dealer can come up with the goods when your first attempt meets with failure.

If the weather is ok this weekend I'll be doing my N/S engine mount as my car knocks on the odd occasion and I can't tell where it's coming from. The drop links and dogbone mount have been replaced, the ARB bushes look fine, the ARB itself is clean as a whistle and the console bushes aren't that bad. The only thing left is the gearbox mount.

Henry's Skoda are generally well regarded in this forum. For good reason, say I.

Like you, I had all of the suspension parts checked-out. This narrowed the field for the likely culprit. It was fortunate however, that the instruction sheet was readily available otherwise I could still be having to put up with the infernal knocking.

Good luck this weekend. Hope the weather holds.

Thanks mate. To be on the safe side I actually did this the other night after work whilst the weather was good. Bit of a PITA to be honest.....getting at the mount means removing the battery and airbox but with a bit of assistance from a mate (who's done this before) the grease went in the right place. It's a bit odd because so much of the mount moves. In the end the entire lot was covered in silicon grease to be on the safe side.

Anyway the results are nothing less than dramatic. So many clonking noises have gone...the car feels so much more solid. Wierd!

I can strongly recommend this to any vRS owners who have not had it done. Even if you think your mount is fine I'd get it greased up. Makes such a difference to both bumpy roads and gearchanges.

Like you, I can hardly believe that some grease can silence the infernal knocking and transform the feeling of solidity. It puzzles me though, that something more permanent such as shock absorbing pads are not part of the design. I assume at some time in the future the grease will need replenishing and I'll bear in mind what you say about getting access to the mount.

Mine creaks now and again over speed humps, is this a sign of the console bushes then?

Squeaks like a ba***rd on the nearside until I used some of Mr. Wobblytickes 'creak be gone' on it.......... but better get it looked at before it causes any bigger problems.

If so, I presume that this is a job for the mechanic mate of mine?
