1.9TDI Brake Replacement

Featured Replies

Just passed MOT on our Octavia - brakes passed but my wife said the tester came to see her in a right flap saying how dangerous our brakes were and that the car shouldnt really be driven - however it does pass MOT standard so he has to pass it.

He also wrote this on the advisory that came with it.

Can anyone guess what he is possibly on about - is the MOT a bit weak on certain elements of brakes.

My wife (main driver of car) is now complaining about every tiny thing to do with the brakes now he has put the jitters on it so I am probably going to have to change the discs and pads.

Can anyone recommend the best supplier to get the discs and pads from (South Manchester or mail order) ? Any particular recommendation on any uprated stuff ?

The MOT test checks specific testable items that have to meet a minimum requirement at the time of test for it to pass. The tester is limited in that nothing can be dismantled to enable a thorough inspection. Along with the green test receipt there should be a yellow sheet with any advisory comments, what are these? What model is it? discs or drums on the rear? You can check the MOT status on line and when the test is done the brake efficiencies are entered can you get these?

Is this a garage that does a lot of Octavias, as sometimes the brakes can appear to be a bit agressive/sensitive/sharp if you are not used to them. If you fit new discs and pads all round the brakes will feel quite awful until everything beds in.

Thanks FordFan.

Mot advisory states "brake discs corroded. brakes to be checked all round. seek advice on brakes asap. **DANGEROUS**"

Car is Octavia 1.9Tdi Ambiente Estate 2002 reg, drums on rear, discs on front.

MOT test station is National Tyres & Autocare.

I have looked online at the mot history but cant find the brake efficiencies anywhere.

Thanks FordFan.

I had an advisory on my '03 Elegance (disk F&R) at the 50,000 service. I bought the disks and pads from the dealer. I did the fronts, but then it subsequently failed the MOT on the rears.

I did them at home that evening; no great problem. Only pain was needing a 7mm allen socket from the fronts and my set only had 3,4,5,6,8,10,12...

In terms of getting the bits to do the job, even though I bought my bits from Skoda, I'd suggest GSF (http://www.gsfcarparts.com/contact/branches.asp), especially as you get a discount as a Briskoda Freedom member:)

I'd get a second opinion if he's only issued an advisory.

I don;t see how you can say "dangerous" and then only issue an advisory....! My rear disks were well knackered and only used have about 50% (or less) of the surface incontact with the pads and it still passed the previous MoT - I changed them this year as I was find the handbrake was getting less effective on slopes!

I think he is possibly looking for some extra cash. Surface rust is normal and you can always just take a wire brush to the surface to get the worse off before some braking to really clean it up.

Have a look at the things and perhaps take a bit of a drive on a nice empty road where you are applying the brakes very gently and accelerating (if you can) or accelerating and braking quite hard.

That should clear the rust off them.

If you do change them, I used GSF and got their brembo/pagid parts for about

I am positive there is no rust on the surface, probably just inbetween the 2 vented discs and on the top edge which I think is normal.

I will get them done, just DIY when I get a minute - just need to decide which components to put back on it.

Had a look at GSF but got lost with the number of parts for the same car !

I guess its best to give them a call and talk through the options of what they stock.

/\ - Entirely normal. Rust on the discs is only a reason for failure if it's on the pad swept areas (and even then it's a bit of a judgement call).
