Air filter change - is 40k too long?

Featured Replies

Just do the paper one every 10k and you should be fine

Seconded.... For a tenner, it's not worth quibbling about.

Air filters don't tend to get uniformly blackened, either. the most direct air path tends to get dirtier, quicker.

Agreed, hence from now on it will be changed with the oil every 10k. The difference in fuel economy is worth it alone.

What puzzles me is that the cabin pollen filter's changed every 10k AFAIK...?

The pollen filter is indeed at every 20k, but the engine one is at 40k which is stupid.

You'd think it'd be the other way round if anything, especially on a diesel. :thumbdwn:

What's the verdict for cleaning non-disposable filters?

40K is far too long. If you want to find out what difference a new filter makes then change it, but don't do anything else (oil/fuel etc). The difference in the car and the economy is noticeable if the old filter has done more than about 10K. I've put a Pipercross in and found none of the suggested problems about dirt on top of the filter (see a previous thread) and I'm quite happy to clean it every 5K. Very easy and quick. The service kit does include an oil spray as well as cleaning fluid. Cost with the service kit means spending about

Found this when clearing the pics from my moby - must have had this thread in my head when I changed the filter on mine! Here is what a 'standard' air filter looks like after about 15k:

...you can see from the two folds nearest the camera more or less what it should look like! :P
