Who's sold a car on Briskoda/car forums?

Featured Replies

I'm always a little dubious about selling a car (2006/06 VRS Estate) on a web forum as I find most people registered already have one (that's why there here).

So how many people have successfully sold a car via a forum?

I've had a couple of car on PistonHeads in the past and not a single enquiry.

Autotrader seems to be the only think that works.

I bought a Felicia from a Brisky member, and sold it on to another one.

If you look through the Cars For Sale section, you will see that quite a number of them end with a "Now Sold" comment - not always through here but often this is the case.

Briskoda also ranks hightly with the search engines - its not unusual for people searching the net for a new / 2nd hand car to come across the site and have a look at the for sale section. There are occasional posts from them in the "Items Wanted" section.

Selling on an enthusiasts site with people that know what they are looking for should result in less tyre-kickers.

And at

I sold mine on Brisky without even advertising it!

I don't think you can look at it like if you're member you already have a Skoda...have seen many calls for specific models wanted.

You are also more likley to get a good price as well because someone specifically wants it.

Advertised my Octavia on here and had little interest.

Advertised it (for free) in the classifieds on PistonHeads.com :: Speed Matters and had 6+ interest calls within 3 days, the first person came up from Wales to see it and bought it there and then, didnt even query the price.

My Octavia wasn't even a VRS and it sold on a "performance car orientated" website.

EDIT: It was "priced to sell" at

Sold two via Briskoda, two on Pistonheads and three on ebay.

On Briskoda....and it was 'Gone in sixty seconds' .....or thereabouts;)

In all honesty, when I was looking for my current car I headed for enthusiast sites working on the basis the cars would be looked after.I'm sure a few do the same

That works two ways though. Someone selling a car on Birskoda will know what a remap is - someone else may not and hence, may not have pushed the car so hard etc.

I reckon a newer car like the OP's would be hard to shift on a forum.Possibly.....

It's only IMHO but I think most people would sniff around garages for newer cars esp only 1 year old.

As I say,just IMHO

I spoke to the dealer who sold it to me and he said they'd knock it out for

I think also if your a long term member and selling your car it works in your favour as other members see it being looked after and can search its history.

I've never failed on the Autotrader though. My vRS will go on Brisky when i need to change.

Two cars..

1. Low mileage, grannied around everywhere.

2. Higher miles, driven as it should be using the rev range

I know which car I would rather have, low mileage cars that have been pansied around everrywhere are usually nowt but grief.

I sold a 04 plate Fabia vRS on here and purchased a Felicia from a very nice gentlemen on here.

Well I just got my "this is the Motor Network, we have XXXX million people who want to buy your car" call from the auto trader ad :D

I sold mine on Brisky to a new member just a couple of weeks ago and it was simple and pain free.

Like what has already been said people on a forum usually know what they are looking at and what questions to ask, but it being a forum the seller can answer them or others on the forum can give impartial advise.

It's also good to know from time to time how the car is doing after rather than it disappearing forever!

At least you definitely won't get canvassers!

I've heard a lot of people having luck on car forums with sales but not myself, alas.

Personally, when I am on the hunt I am usually looking for the private sales.

I look at Autotrader, Pistonheads, Owner forums, fish4 and ebay.

I tend to visit owner forums when looking into the cars and to find out about problems, real world MPG, etc etc.

Whilst I'm there I will look at the classifieds area and once settled on a particular make and model and spec will put up a wanted post.

Also when selling a car I do a search on the make and model within Pistonheads in the 'PX' field.

That way you can bring up other cars for sale where the owner is looking to PX to what you are trying to sell.

When I was selling my 330d I did this and about 10 adverts came back of people after a 330d. None of them had a car I was considering but it was worth a shot all the same.

If I can get a good deal at a dealers then I will also look at dealerships. 19/20 times though they can't make the numbers work well enough for me. I dont use finance (unless 0% but thats usually only on brand new anyway) so that dealer facility which attracts many does not apply to me.

I've sold via 'Trader, eBay and here. As you've seen from other experiences above, 'enthusiast' forum sales can and do work, but like any car sale - it's about timing and having the right person come along. Just because you're targeting a primarily Skoda owner audience here, doesn't mean people won't tell their friends/relatives/work colleagues. To me it's all about giving the sale maximum exposure. You can also advertise on somewhere like here in much, much greater detail than AutoTrader et al offer.

I'd also say that with a forum (Brisky/PH etc) ad, you're likely to get more serious interest and a better quality of buyer. Some may disagree; that's just my personal findings.

You say AutoTrader works - I'd agree but I use it as my fallback if other avenues aren't working. I think it works because it has the largest potential audience (paper based and online) and is likely to be ones of the sources people turn to first when looking for a 2nd hand car.

If it were me I'd be advertising in the relevant internet forum(s) and Pistonheads, then perhaps consider eBay and lastly AutoTrader.

Good luck!

Right, so from reading this post we have.....

2006/06 VRS Estate

stick it on Autotrader at

 how cynical! :P

At least it's more subtle than some, if you choose to view it that way ;)

I fel for this to once before after they spotted my advert on the trader.

I know hindsight's a wonderful thing, but when I've been approached by these companies and politely but firmly dealt with them, you do have to think - if their so called potential buyers are so interested, why couldn't they find your car on AutoTrader themselves?!

Nowt from Autotrader so far and it's the cheapest/best specced for 100 mile radius.

I really thought it would go quickly.
