Fitting RARB, axle stands or ramps?

Featured Replies

Which is the best/easiest way? I've got a trolly jack and axle stand but also a pair of ramps, i'm thinking ramps cos it saves all the faffing about with the jack and stands, its just a case of reverse up em, plus it'll be higher too....

you couldn't do it on ramps because you need to take the weight off the rear suspension to undo and remove the bolts at the bottom of the rear shock absorbers

How come on VRStu's site it shows him unbolting the rear dampers with the car on axle stands under the spring cups (ie the suspension still under load)? The weight is only on the spring not the dampers?....

that will be to stop the rear beam dropping down when the damper aren't attached

If the spring cups are on axle stands or the rear wheels are on ramps how can it? :P :D

:ne_nau:

edit: right, just had a quick look at stu's site and i can see where the confusion is coming from. all i can say is there is more than one way to skin a cat, do whatever you feel most comfortable doing and you have over a ton of metal over you when you are underneath it, so be carefull!

in other words just wing it.. lifes a lottery be lucky lol

 yeah fook it!

I used two jacks and placed axle stands under my car just in case when fitting mine.

I'd feel safer using the ramps, so aslong as its physically possible to fit the arb with it on ramps thats what i'll do.

I used a pair of ramps. Easy peasy.

Cool, i'll do that then. Cheers.

i used a two poster ramp at my work

The suspension needs to be active so that you can undo the bolt on the shock absorber, so jacking the car up is NOT an option. Best way is to get under it with car resting on its wheels, a mate of mine lent me his ramp if you cant do this then place axle stands under the rear axel ends as described by stu

i put mine up on ramps so much easer if you have got them

The back wheels have to be "hanging" for it to go on I believe. :) You need to unbolt/rebolt on the bottom of the strut, so the best way is probably to shove it on axle stands, and with handbrake on, use the trolley jack to raise the wheels up a bit at tyre level, to ease the unbolting/rebolting up. :)

Note that I got Jabbasport to fit mine - much easier.

Sorted, used the ramps, was a piece of p1ss.

So you just reversed it up on some ramps and chocked the front wheels? No jack needed?

Yep, put the handbrake on and left it in reverse too.

It's the opposite J, you need the weight of the car on the suspension so that it's in it's normal ride height.

Brilliant my Dad has a pair of ramps though they are quite skinny.... my Corsa with 205 tyres down 30mm wouldn't go up on them.

Have you read my guide?

Yep. Doesnt look too bad :D
