Diesel in the Oil (New Octavia vRS)

We got a new Octavia vRS PD170 about 4 months ago. After a month it broke down in spectacular style by suddenly revving off the meter and filling the dual carriage way with white smoke. The Skoda garage said the oil was overfilled and returned it to us.

A month later it did it again. We took it too a different Skoda garage who again said the oil was overfilled but this time diagnosed it was caused by diesel getting into the oil !

They replaced the fuel pump and said the car was fixed.

Last week the car started rocking when stationary. We checked the oil and found it have gone up by about an inch since we last checked. The car's about to go back to the garage again, although it's clear they have no idea what the problem is.

Has anyone heard of this problem?

perhaps its getting past the rings? Was the car run in gently or ragged from day one?

This is becoming a fairly common problem on the later PD engines. The oil gets into the sump via the tandem pump which is driven by the camshaft. Its function is to lift the fuel out of the tank and pressurise it to a few bars to feed the unit injectors.

I don't know what VAG/Bosch have done here as the early pumps on the Euro Cat III engines were reliable as long as the fixing bolts stayed tight.

Running away due to fuel ingestion is about the most damaging thing which can happen to a diesel - the governor is powerless to limit the revs in this situation. Do not settle for anything less than a new engine.

And a new oxidation catalyst + DPF filter; these will both be wrecked.

Try asking VAG and see if you can get a straight answer... I've seen this problem before on an Audi.

A german RS-TDI had the same problem. Pistonrings were broken, not an unknown fault at VAG.

Go to a experienced VAG dealer and let your motor be checked. The guy in Germany got a new engine. And I wouldn't like to drive your engine any further. :thumbdwn:

The RAC guy who picked us up the second time it broke down told us the exhaust system would be shot, especially as oil was blowing out of it at the time.

Skoda insisted no permenant damage had been done, to the engine or exhaust.

Unfortunately I see we've got no choice but to get legal with Skoda, which is a real pain. They're simply not taking the problem and damage seriously.

VAG boot boys - here we go again.

Get nasty with them, involve Trading Standards and don't give up. The engine and the exhaust components will be scrap.

Better still, keep the car as it is, wait until it starts to run away again, then abandon ship. (Skoda say that the engine is OK).
