Remapped Fabia - Judder under accelleration around 2-2.3k revs

Featured Replies

First post - hello!

Just viewed a remapped Fabia which has a Sachs clutch fitted. No clutch slip, but when flooring it from around 2,000 rpm, there's a fairly violent judder until ~2,300rpm. The entire car judders!

From a quick search, it looks like it's the flywheel due to the torque. The car has 40k miles, 30k miles of which remapped, 10k with the Sach clutch. The car is putting out 180bhp and 302lb/ft.

Does it sound like it's the flywheel?

If so, is this something that will need to be replaced eventually? Any idea when? Is there something that it could easily be replaced with, and if so, how much? :)

Thanks!

was it an 06 plate?

if so search forums for "stuttur" = known prob on 06 plates....

Don't know if it's the stutter....the remap should have cured that.

Flywheel if the car is juddering.

DMF struggling to handle the torque :(

There is also an issue with blocked injectors, although I don't know how that would affect the car

It's a 05 plate.

So, most likely it's the flywheel.

Is this something that just needs to be driven around, or is it something that's going to need replaced? Car is on 40k, I'll be doing 20k miles a year for 2-3 years with it.

Thanks for the replies so far.

you can drive around it... if you floor it only from 3k up, and be more progressive with the throttle until then you'll drive around it, some people on here have done a single mass flywheel conversion, but they will make the car more rough....

Was the remap a custom job? If so take it back and ask them the the reduce the torque at the bottom end.

If the flywheel is juddering that much then isn't it likely the damage has already have been done?

It's a Star Performance remap. 180bhp, 300lb/ft

This is what I'm worried about - is it likely to be an expensive repair waiting to happen, or is it something that can just be driven around and the car will live happily ever after?

:)

Well, a flywheel can be bought from GSF for about

Just buy a different one - there's loads about!

Interesting that you both say that. Is it not something that affects all remapped vRS's? Or is it a sign to stay well clear of this one?

The car itself has been maintained well (FSH + oil changes every 5k) and modified with a Sachs clutch and remap. Not done on the cheap. :P

It's down to how the car has been driven. If it's been booted from low revs repeatedly (with or without a remap) then it was damage the DMF. I'd be looking to get one that didn't judder violently, personally :D

Chris

My 05 remapped Fabia vRS had DMF vibrations after just 5k with the remap at circa 25k miles. Wasn't ever a real problem.

However, one day it will require replacing. When they discintegrate they do it with style, sometimes even smashing the bell housing in the process.

Either buy the car with the view to having a new one fitted and the map altered, or just buy a different one. :)

Thinking about it again, the juddering violently part is an exaggeration. You can certainly feel juddering around 2-2.3k revs under hard accelleration where it then disappears. How much was it juddering? Certainly enough to feel it clearly. Violently juddering? No.

Would you say its like going over a really harsh set of rumble strips or paint lines......the sort you get on dodgy junctions, or high-speed round-about approches off motorways; to warn drivers to slow down? Also can you feel it through the peddles, steering wheel and gearstick? If so its almost definitly the flywheel.

When my DMF screams in pain I wouldnt really describe it as a judder, just a harsh vibration.

Exactly like that - my girlfriend could feel it in the passenger seat. You could feel it through the dash.

So more of a harsh vibration than a judder. Finding it hard to describe, but you've got it spot on.

Yeh definitly the DMF. I remember the day I was driving back from JabbaSport after having my Custom Remap. I was not aware at the time of the notion of not booting it till you pass 2.5K and also was not really aware of what the judder felt like. When I was initially booting it on the motorway after the first 30 minutes I kept thinking I was just passing over a rough motorway surface everytime I planted the throttle, then I started to notice this was not the case. After abit it twigged that the power and torque was hurting the ol' DMF at low revs so I had to adopt a slightly different style of driving.

But yeh; thats the way I always knew it. It feels just like your driving over cats eyes all the time...or that painted warning line between the slow-lane and hard-shoulder to tell you that your falling asleep. :P

between the slow-lane and hard-shoulder

Lane 1, Dan, not the slow lane! :P
