Broken spring

Featured Replies

I noticed an odd noise from the front of the car this morning and it turns out to be a 3" peice of spring from the damper unit.

I have had a quote of

Yes I would replace the pair of them as the other one may not be far behind.

It's not so much that other one might be close to breaking but more a case of after x years and x miles the springs will have 'settled' and you could end up having one side lower than the other as well as an imbalance.

Just had the rear spring done on the octy to get it through the MOT. The very bottom part of the spring, the bit where the coil tapers to a point had snapped off...must have been 1" long at the most...not a happy bunny...MOT inspector said he only noticed i 'cos the metal was a clean break and was still nice and shiney.... bu66er must have been a Magpie in a former life...

I had a spring replaced earlier this year as it was cracked , I only done the one , even though it is advisable to do both , but I am skint lol. If you can stratch to it , get them both changed. My car has been fine with just the one done , mind you.

On Wednesday I heard an almighty SNAP in a slow 5 mph left hander N/S wheel arch. Jacked up and removed the top flat section of the Spring about 4 inches worth, has a section of paint missing and a rus spot which is where it has failed.

Can you just replace the spring? Whaty damage will I do if I continue to drive her?

Not only have I had the rear spring fixed [ my post above!!!] Now Just done the front spring on my octy due to the top three inches breaking off. [ there is a thread I posted with pics on here somewhere]The broken spring had slipped over the top strut mount and was forcing itself up against the turret. The car was sitting 1" lower on one side. It drove okay apart from the clonking but the entire spring 'force' was being restrained by a combination of the weight of the car and the thin metal cup above the turret. The danger here is that if yours has done the same then the cup, which is only designed to stop the strut from falling out when you jack the car up is having to take full spring loading..it is possible that it could fail and the spring can push the strut out from under the turret..not something i would like to happen at speed. I did mine asap and I needed spring compressers fitting just to get the strut/spring free from the car...not easy to do inside an octys suspension turret. But now all is well. The spring was about

Could anyone point in the direction where to get a pair of springs either OEM or patent or aftermarket Im not fussed.

Main Dealer, German Swedish & French, Eurocarparts, motorfactors.

Most motor factors will be able to get hold of them or the main Stealer.

OEM springs are colour coded so you may need to make sure that you are getting the correct spring. If you look on your spring [after cleaqning of the dirt there should be two or more large colour dots about the size of a 5p piece towards the lower part of the coil on the spring. These coloured dots denote what the spring rating is so its important to get the correct one especially if you are replacing only one of them. If you are going to the main dealer then take your service manual the spring rating is coded in the sticker in the manual [another sticker is stuckin the boot of the car]. The dealer will be able to enter this code into the system and get the correct spring for your year/model of fabia
