Do LSDs need special gearbox oil?

Featured Replies

My mind says no, as the diff is just bolted on the back, and the actual oil is used for the gears.

Either way - Anyone recommend a decent performance gearbox oil, if there is such a thing. Shall soon be filling up my spare 6 speed complete with Peloquin, so would be good to be fore-armed, to make the swap over as painless as possible. :)

The gearbox oil lubricates all moving parts in the gearbox including the diff, but no you don't need a special oil, but a good one always helps.

I might have a word with Opie - He's on here isn't he?

It was your gearbox oil thread which triggered this thread. :D

I'm using a different one, specificed against Honda's. And it's much better, but no. They don't need a special one.

Will probably just slap some 75w 90 in it then (or whatever the normal stuff is)

lol! sorry Dev!

some diffs have separate, self contained oil; by the sounds of the other posts the Skoda setup utilises the gearbox oil...

Opie is on here... haven't spoken to him yet tho...

Motul do separate oils - for both gearbox and LSD fluid:

PDM Racing - Motul Lubricants

Don't wanna give you any further advice! might owe you a new LSD! speak to Opie and see what they say (I might call James @ JBS in the morn and ask what he thinks)

PS: attachment is of standard oil from Stealers (am on with changing it this weekend!)

Taken from the Quaife website:

.......a maintenance-free design which retains the standard oil lubrication.

Think this might be specific to the application as the new Megane R26 uses a different oil for gearbox and LSD.................l believe the Focus RS also has different oils specified.

The quote I posted is specifically from the 02M application page.

What type of LSD is it?

A Torsen type (inc Quaffe ATB) doesn't, a viscous coupling doesn't, a "Detroit Locker" doesn't, but a Salisbury type may, and I'd refer queries about them to the manufacturer.

Peloquin is pretty much an exact copy of a Quaife ATB.
