Due to the slower depreciation of diesels, I suspect you'd get a better example of a petrol-engined version.

The 1.6 is fine on performance - it's by no means a fast car but it's well-geared such that you can use what power is available without any real struggle.

Will happily cruise at motorway speeds, and return about 40mpg doing so.

Slightly more expensive to insure, but a better engine would be the non-turbo version of the 1.8 20v, but I believe that was only available on the pre-facelift models.

Rob.

No idea if this is any help to you, but there's been a 02 reg SDi in the "(Glasgow) Herald" classifieds for that sort of money, for the last 2 weeks or so.

More generally, try a local Esso station on Friday afternoons; they often have a regional free sheet.

Is there anywhere on this site which has the performance figures for MK1 Octavias, especially 30 to 70 and 50-70 times

Many thanks

Unfortunately Glassgow is a little way out from me and I don't think my current ride will get there (not a Skoda btw)

Not that I can recall - if there is, it'll probably be ones people have timed for themselves...

I've a Mark 1 1.6. Its 0-60 time new was about 12 secs max about 115. I don't have intermediate times, but its 'reasonably' brisk when not loaded. As Rob has said in his post, its quite happy on the motorway at legal speeds and will return 40 mpg. Insurance is group 8. You would need GLX or Ambiante spec to get aircon. There are a several on autotrader, petrol and diesel, within your budget. Try to get a test drive and see for yourself.

What Kind of mpg does it do around town?

What do people think of this one

USED SKODA OCTAVIA 1.6 GLXi, Chatham, Kent

Re the above car, how long do the gearboxs and engines last, any major and/or expensive items that one could expect to replace in the next 40,000 miles?

Sorry for all the questions but want to make a sensible & wise purchase

What Kind of mpg does it do around town?

Around town I would expect 33-35 mpg in mixed traffic. My long term average according to the trip computer is about 37.

My 1999 GLX has 80k miles on the clock. Engine, gearbox and clutch are still fine. Nothing major has gone wrong. It been regularly serviced and had the cam belt changed. The front brake pads were changed at 50k. Tyres about 25k a set. Check that the air con and everything electrical works - mine has broken 3 window regulators at

As Andy says, but the trip computer fuel consumption figures on these cars are notoriously optomistic. Subtract 10% from what they say to get a reasonable idea of actual consumption.

Oddly though, the "available range" figure and odometer seem pretty accurate.

With the way the price has been chipped (check screen sticker against advert), try offering 2 grand cash unless you need to trade in to even get the 2 grand. (I'm not asking and don't want to know whether or not that's the case.)

Re the fuel consumption this seems simmilar to my current car which does 33 to 35 on a mixed of urban including stop start and cross country driving.

Yep I noticed that about the price, iirc car has been on dealers forcourt for a couple of months and looking at DVLA car tax website the date of liability for the tax goes back to April. Maybe it's the colour that people don't like?:D

Are thinking whether to trade my current car in or note
