Fitting Audi RNS-D into Furby vRS SE

Featured Replies

Thanks for info all. (removing old Symphony unit) Sorry for delay been trying to fit unit and out for a drive. Situation is as follows. Old unit (Symphony) out, new unit (RNS-D) in but not properly. It is too low down sitting in the current furby plastic 'cage' and als the front fascia will need to be trimmed on the sides to allow it to slide in fully. Electrically it seemed too easy! really was plug and play. Vrs SE wiring had all the correct connectors. Radio works, is connected to CD changer, sat nav comes on......BUT.... I reckon there's no connection to the cars data system (Canbus?) as sat nav only updates occasionally. Read in an Audi forum that it only checks sats every so often then uses car data to keep the sat nav moving. Also when adjusting audio fader there is no sound from the rear speakers. Lastly get the following error message on start-up "RDS-TMC tuner: Connection to tuner is faulty or could not be established". Any thoughts/comments much appreciated.

Hello Essexsnapper

I will be truthfull up front my knowledge is limited but my thoughts are..

Did you use a "plug and play" lead this will enable the ecu to talk to the mfd correctly to update your gps position(abs pulse etc)

There should be a setting on the Mfd to disable the Tmc box.or it can be disabled through Vag.com

No sound from the rear speakers might be connected to the wiring loom again or the dsp settings

Hi Tank

I purchased a 'plug & play lead' assuming I would need one, but the existing wiring plugged straight in the the RNS-D unit so I didn't use it! Looking at the P&P lead not sure where to plug what!

Essex

As far as i know you really do need to use that plug and play lead,it should give you the connection you need for the mfd to update etc,as far as fittings go they should all be unique, they will only fit one way etc it might be worth you looking at vwnavi.com...the audi section.

Tank (and anyone else listening)

Spent a few mins looking at lead and connections, as you said, only really goes one way (too much of a hurry earlier) and lo and behold after a few minutes driving it seems to be working !!! Still no rear speakers when checking fader settings tho

Essex

Progress good news:thumbup: the speaker connections are in the small cluster, yellow blue etc,i believe the middle of three connections as you look at the mfd from the front(left handside) if these are all securely connected then i am struggling for answers!

I do know that you may have to drive around for some time to get a good satelite fix, from what i understand there are 30 sats available you need 3 for a fix,but 6 or 7 will give you good results.

Good luck and when you get it all finished post some pics as i am sure their are many people thinking of the same mod

The unit may be coded for an external amp such as Bose if it came from an Audi. That may be the cause of your speaker issues if all of your connections are correct.

Hi Stu, can it be un-coded?

Re your info on fitting hands free kit to the Symphony would the same apply to the RNS-D unit re pin connections? (was suprised to find my furby SE had the 3 mini coloured blocks already fitted when I took the Symphony out)

Yeah it can be recoded with VAG-COM. Roo is an Essex boy and pretty handy with VAG-COM so you could speak nicely to him.

There is a slight chance the RNS-D might have different pinouts for the phone but it's not an issue that can't be overcome - In theory it's the same setup. Do you have a sticker on the unit with pinouts?

  • Author

Yes unit has a sticker plus I have a jpg piccy that I can use.

So you have all you need then really. A left and right audio and a telemute.

Audi HU's don't have outputs for the rear speakers, they always use amps for the rear and in the case of bose equipped cars for all speakers.

I've had similar issues fitting an RNS-E DVD sat nav in my Octy.

Does the illumination work ok for you as this signal usually comes down the can-bus on newer Audi HU's.

I take that as saying I can't ever have sound in the rear speakers with the RNS-D (not too bothered, rarely have passengers and not an big audiophile) Yes I have illumination when my lights are on. What exactly does that indicate?

You can have sound through the rear speakers but this would require additional wiring and a seperate amp.

The fact you have illumination means you either have a CAN connection at the HU or it's pre-CAN HU. I'm not that familiar with the RNS-D so can't say which it is.

UPDATE: Can confirm RNS-D only has connections for the front speakers. Whilst in Maplins buying Scotchkloks I saw some fag packet sized speaker amps. Would these be any good for powering rear speakers? (if yes what power would i need) OR could I just bridge F & R speaker wires to send output to the rear?

If you check the wiring diagram you'll see there are pre-out and switched live wires available on the upper multiplug where the CD changer connector is. You need to use these by either making the connector yourself (I can provide part no's) or by using a pre made connector from autoleads or similar. You will also need a power feed to the amp and wiring from the amp to the speakers. The small amps you saw in maplin may have been inline ones which amplify an existing high level feed (which you no longer have to the rears).

Edit - Looks like Eddy has sorted you out.
