System Upgrading

Featured Replies

My current pc is getting a bit slow

AMD 3500 (Skt 939)

Two Nvidia 7800GT In SLi

1 GB Ram

1 Digital Tv Tuner Card

1 SB Live 24 Card

What do ppl recommend on an Upgrade, Intel or AMD chips,

New Graphics Card(s)

New Sound Card?

Your thoughts

Obvious one there is ram, I'm an intel user i'm afraid so dont have a clue on amd sockets or cores, my view from reviews when looking last time that the intel core 2 duo was better than the equivlent amd, however, that was several months ago and these things change frequently.

what board?

you could just upgrade the chip.. you can pick up some bargain AMD X2 chips on ebay.

Im using a 939 board so bit limited to processor upgrade as now AMD are using socket AM2

The price of DDR memory compared to DDR2 is crazy,

DDR can be picked up cheap as can an 939 X2.

For a cheap upgrade I would do 2 or 4GB of RAM and a decent X2.

Failing that I'd say go core duo at the moment for bang per buck.

Well Ive bitten the bullet and ordered these, should be here on tuesday :D

1 AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200 Dual-Core Socket 939 OEM Processor

2 CRUCIAL 1GB DDR PC3200 400MHz 184-PIN UNBUFF 128MX64 Memory Modules

I'm guessing you've ordered 2x 1GB sticks of RAM? If so, have you checked your motherboard will take 3GB? Mine won't, it will take either 2 or 4, but not 3.

Its an MSI Neo4 Platinum Sli, reading through the manual it says it should be ok, im currently running 2x512mb in dual channel config

Hehe, I'm running my main system on an MSI Neo4 platinum SLI too (although just have a 7950GT in there at the mo) :D

I reckon RAM upgrade and dual core CPU will bring you lots of benefits.

However, you may be better off running with just the 2x1GB sticks of RAM to benefit from dual channel. I'm pretty sure if I stick a third stick on the mobo, it will run in single channel. And once you're at 2GB, I reckon the performance loss in going from dual-channel to single channel will more than outweigh the gain in going from 2 to 3GB. :)

You might get away with doing 1gb and a 512mb stick in each channel? As long as the channels are equal, it should in theory run dual channel. No?

Don't think so, it's normally advisable to not even mix manufacturers in each channel never mind a gig and two 512s.

Benchmark it before and after to see what difference it makes.

PCMark and 3DMark are quite good benchmarking programs.

Any computer fairs round your neck of the woods - try a Google - find them decent price ,and often some dealers there willing to do decent stuff at reasonable price.

Parts arrived, quite impressed at the performance upgrade, now 3gb RAM in dual channel

I didn't think Win XP could recognise more than 2gb RAM. That might not be the same as 'utilize' anyway so I'm happy to stand corrected if somebody else would like to confirm.

XP can see up to 4GB but due to other factors you might not see all of the 4GB (Typically 3.5ish)

Agreed.

What's the deal with all this dual-core business? Reminds me of when NT first came out and everyone was raving about dual-processors...
