Gear box prob and hitting a drain

Featured Replies

Only been driving for a week, and am not a fast driver nor a stuiped one, fair enough i hav my moments, anywhooo the council decided 2 dig a road up and scraped the tarmac off the road, there was a ramp sign warning you of a bump in the road, it was dark and i was going about 30mph and the drains in the road were still there, they didnt take them out, so the height of the drain is level wit the road before the took the tarmac off, so fairly high, anyways i went over the drain, (didnt see it till the last second, was 2 late) was a horrible noise and pulled over straight away wit my hazzards on, and looked under car to see any visible damage, couldnt really see any dam (wit my fone light, checked in morning and nothing jus a wire dangling but all will tie that off) and listened for any liquid dripping, the car seems fine, well i fort it did, just noticed today while parkin in B n Q that when i turn the wheel to the left, (not quite full lock) there is a sort of (DUNG) like a thud noise and the wheel vibrates a lil (wasnt there before i had the lil accident) so mayb i done something to the car, it steers fine but as i said its just before a full lock to the left u here the noise (its not the power steerin noise nor the rev goin up abit as u steer) am thinkin about takin to garage its booked in for a engine management light is on but thats sorted he got the part i wonder if he cud look under the car very much dowt it (cars under engine and gearbox warrenty, - 1 month). Another problem i noticed lately is changing from gear 2 to 3 it sort of sticks the gear doesnt quite go in and it makes a horrible noise, i know its nudge nudge to get into 3 its jus accross and up but u gottah be really carful and make sure its in 3, this wasnt a problem wen i got the car i know that also before my little accident wit the drain the gear 3 problem was there, so the garage wont do anythin wit the gear box, am really stuck as to what to do, (book it in the garage where am gettin the new part coz of the management light, see if he can check under the car for me? and look at the gear box perhaps? any answer or help please

John (Whos gutted)

p.s no warnin for the high drains, mayb i shud go back to that road and take a photo of the drain and get onto the council.

Maybe the impact has broken or cracked a spring, only a specialist will be able to spot any cracks.

Warranty? - don't tell them about the drain. They won't have to pay anyway, it'll be via an insurance system. Just say you have the problem and leave it to them.

This is just going from bad to worse, am really pee'd off with myself and just dont know what to do here,

I would get yourself back to the site and get a few pictures.

I'm currently in dispute with my local council for a similar thing.

Councils are self insured meaning that they consider your claim and then cough up themselves. Be wary though, my council demanded that I provided them with a copy of MOT, Insurance Certificate and Driving Licence. Told them to feck off as they have no right to request that info, but it wouldn't have surprised me if they tried it on with my insurance.

mmm councils are tricky things... I did a bit of research after pothole damage destroyed a tyre on my current car... if they have checked the road , as per their required schedule, they don't have to pay up, in your circumstances, they had all the relevant warning signs up for the road surface (was there one that said raised drain hole covers?) if there was, they won't have to pay out...

I would suggest (as someone else did) take it back to the garage you bought it from, explain the symptoms of the faults, and let them fix 'em under your warranty. edit: (withought explaing hitting the drain cover!)

Wo Hoo another 17 yr old on the forum, I hd the sme prob with my fabia nd, was just the tracking was out and the front ARB was bumping on the body or something, had the tracking sorted and the problem sorted itself.

Nice choice with the fabia tho, i am also in the situation of being skint after paying for the car and insurance.

ttt,
