Broken Driver Side Electric Window

Featured Replies

Hi I'm brand new on here, hope forumee's can help. My electric window was struck half way open and so I removed the outer door trim to reveal a secondary door skin to which the electric motor and speaker and associated electrics are attached. Took off the e. motor and the two window cable were all messed up around the plastic drive. Undid the 10 or so 10mm bolts and tried to remove the secondary metal door skin, after alot of fiddling managed to get it separated from the door, but not completed separated as for some reason the central locking unit electrics aren't removable!! Both cables need replacing. These look difficult to fit? Do I:

1. purchase new cable and plastic drive and try and refit (how difficult is this?)

2. Purchase second hand door skin with all parts intact (cutting and rejoining c.locking wire)

3. Take it to a garage and pay through the nose

Is it worth getting a manual, or so which one?

Thanks

Tim

Hi & welcome to Briskoda. :)

I've had this happen on my VW Golf and the procedure for dismantling the door and repairing it is very similar. You might find it useful to read this guide about repalcing the window mech on a Golf:

VWvortex Forums: DIY - Replacing the front door window regulator clips and/or door lock module

Do I:

1. purchase new cable and plastic drive and try and refit (how difficult is this?)

Don't think they sell this separately for the Fabia (although they do for the Golf).

2. Purchase second hand door skin with all parts intact (cutting and rejoining c.locking wire)

That's an option but more likely to fail again.

3. Take it to a garage and pay through the nose

Yeah, I don't like that one either, I'd purchase a new "mech" that's the whole inner door pannel with mechanisim and window guides attached and fit it yourself as that's what the garage would do !

Is it worth getting a manual, or so which one?

Probably, for future use although don't expect too much from it, I've got a Haynes Manual which was just about worth the purchase price.

Thanks

Good luck ! :D

You need a new regulator at around

Hi Guys

Thanks for your replies, really helpful. Td-eye that step by step guide for the VW is very similar and will provide a really useful manual.

Got a new regulator which came as part of a new door panel, I tried a shortcut by not removing the the lock and mechanism and now the metal rod for the door button has come out of the lock and I think the mech is broken. I'll try and get hold of another mech, but now difficult is it to removal the door lock barrel?

1 possibly 2 screws concealed under grommets above the catch. If there are 2, 1 will be a securing screw and the other will be a long large headed screw that when undone rotates a metal clip in the barrel. When the clip is in the correct position the barrel can be pulled out. Do not remove this screw completely. So basically rotate the clip a little and try to pull the lock (it is easier to pull with the key in and the outer handle slightly pulled). The metal rod sits in a nylon clip and often come out, it may well be a case of just fitting it correctly.

Hi guys need your help again. I'm still having problems taking off the lock and door lock module. He's a copy of a VW but the retaining screw for the lock is the same, problem is the inspection hole is small (smaller than this picture)and i can't get the appriopate tool in the hole.

My car is a Classic with aftermarket electric windows and central locking. None of the comfort or elegance parts fit, bought what I thought was a door module for my car, turns out it's different? My wiring is much simpler only two wires for the electic windows. Help needed as my window is currently being held up with three wood bantons!

Technically you dont need to undo that lot.

If you look to the back of the door on the carrier there are some plastic rivets, punch them through and you dont have to touch the door lock/catch other than to disconnect the multi plug.

Hi Lummox

Unfortunately I buggered the plastic clip in the door module that holds the vertical metal rod that pushes down to operate the door lock, so I need to get it out to either change the clip or fit a new module. The carrier which is currently sitting in my front room, can't be fitted unless the door module is attached. I tried that, that's why I broke the plastic clip because the metal rod won't fit thought it's hole in the carrier with the door module in place.
