Reserve Tank

Featured Replies

When the fuel light comes on once the last few litres of Diesel are left in the tank the range comp reckons there are 50+ miles left in the tank (quite high I think) this does fluctuate depending on driving style but how low have people actually taken it before filling up?

I'm going on a high MPG drive this weekend so want to get the best out of it I can. I'm trying to do London - Exeter and back (with some round town driving) on one tank.

cheers

Derren

There isn't really any point in running it empty though, surely? You might as well just fill it up when you need to...

Rob.

I've taken my 'real' vRS to 0miles and then driven 15 miles to re-fuel it. Not to hijack the thread, but the handbook quotes 55ltr tank with 7ltr reserve. Is this a total of 62ltrs(492miles), or 55ltrs(436miles)???

Ran 5 miles last night after the comp. said 0 miles and got 43 litres in at fill up

50 miles on the reserve is not exactly running it empty and this figure seems to be conservative anyway. Anyway you know what the TDi lads are like :)

Well, yeah, I don't mean fill up when the light comes on, just that running it until the range is 0 and then trying to find some diesel seems like more risk than it's worth! :D

Though I regularly take my car down to it's last litre, but that's a bit different...

The tank on fabia inc the vent tank is about 55l 12gallons which is good for 630 miles normal driving with a indicated average of 47mpg

:)

i wouldnt consider running the car really low, as if it runs out its a back to dealer job to bleed the system to get it to run again. not to mention the **** that will get pulled out the tank

London to Exeter is a looooonnnnng way... I say you'll be fairly lucky unless you pootle down the M3 / A303 all the way, AND fill up your tank beyond it's normal "click" limit. ;)

We used to have a citroen dispatch 1.9 TDI van, and I remember a few years ago driving from Stevenage to Exeter and back again, via moorfields eye hospital in London on just 1 tank of diesel.

Lol - just run this through MS Mappoint and it reckons the roundtrip of 390 miles would take 4 1/2 hours and cost me

London-Exeter is about 200 miles

If you use the vent tank and dont gun it too much you should get 550-600 miles out of a tank full

I know Exeter to Heathrow is just under 200 miles if that's a basis?

Depends how much town work you need to do in Exeter too I suppose... where you planning on visiting in town? :D

Well I'm heading onto Tavistock camping for a couple o' days, so if you see a Black VRS it's probably gonna be me :)

BTW any speed cameras I should look out for I still don't have my OriginB2- not that I'm gonna speed or anything...................................

Cheers

London to TAVISTOCK and back? - thats an extra 100 miles over just to Exeter... :D

Only one speed camera to watch out for on the A30 between Exeter and Okehampton, which is at the first crossroad you come to, but its facing the other way so make a mental note for on the way back. ;)

Oh, and when past Okehampton, there's a MASSIVE dip ( I mean BIG ) and on the downhill bit there's speed camera dashes in the road - ignore them because the camera has gone (the amount of people I see get up to 100 on the downhill, then do an emergency brake is soooo funny. :D) The bar-stewards hid it behind the bridge pillar too...

No cameras on the A386 to Tavistock I'm fairly sure! (you'll be passing my way quite close as you scoot past Okehampton - look to the big round hill on the left - I live in it's shadow :D)

The Octavia fuel tank capacity is 55 litres of which 7 litres is reserve, except that the 4X4 has a 63 litre tank of which 8 litres is reserve.

Can somebody please explain to me what the point of a 'reserve tank' is?

If you have a trip computer & a light that flashes when you are down to the last gallon what is the point of another spare 7 litres? It seems a little excessive to prevent any cr@p getting into the fuel system.

I filled up this week with 0 miles distance left on the trip and got 45 litres into the tank. Looks like the calibration on my system is a little out or its just not very accurate at the bottom of the range, which i suppose is to be expected of any measuring system.

Uptheposh.

There isn't a reserve tank as such. It would be more meaningful to say that the low fuel warning light iluminates when the remaining fuel falls to 7 litres and below.

The TDI can be made to run for ever if you really push it! A few years ago I did about 50 miles with the comp showing zero!!!! Was up in the Scottish highlands and everywhere was shut. Boy did I ever listen to every grunt rattle etc! If I keep the speed to 55-60mph I can get 60-65MPG out of my TDI, this means I can do about 90miles when the light comes on. Normally I limit this to about 50miles and dont push it more than 10miles if the comp shows zero.

Well I'm back and I managed 490 miles (motorway driving I averaged 50MPG) but round the moors and towns this dropped to low 40's.

Had 40 miles left on tank before I filled up so not to bad. From Cheddar to London I averaged 53 MPG with the range reporting a 505 mile range so I'm happy enough.

My mates that have petrol cars were gutted when I filled up my tank 200 miles after they'd done theirs :)
