Joe public, and indeed the majority of dealers don't change the waterpump at cambelt swap time.

However, the savvy Briskodian sees that if they have it changed as a precautionary measure when the cambelt is changed it only costs them

:iagree: - It's way cheaper to fix a known weak point when you can do it for parts cost, given that the alternative is to spend out on all the work for a cambelt change when the waterpump goes.

Incidentally, I think that the pump is less of a weak spot on the diesels cos they run cooler, and spin it slower.

I used to have an old bmw, one morning thought I heard a rumble from the bearings, 20 miles later impellor in bits, bearings shattered belts wrecked, my thought if you think it may need doing or you want piece of mind get it done before it gets you and you kick yourself when the tow truck is bringing you home :)

p.s. my old impellor looked like the one above but mine jammed and caused a real old mess, even getting the old pump was a struggle, had to smash the alum mounting to get it free as it was so twisted.
