Norton/Vista/Zone Alarm/I.E......

Featured Replies

Being the helpful chap that I am  I offered to assist the Mother-in-Law sorting out her PC lastnight.

Basic Packard Bell running Vista with Norton Everything.

Norton trial due to expire and she is keen not to continue with the subscription due to problems with Norton on her last machine.

The Plan:- Remove Norton and replace with Zone Alarm and AVG anti Virus.

The Result:- Dowloaded & installed Zone Alarm fine. Can not remove Norton. I.E. does not load any web pages briefly flashing some dns type error.

Things tried:- System Restore - Unsuccsesful.

Any suggestions?

I am heading back round after work to try and sort.

Preloaded Norton is a pain to get rig of as there is usually no uninstaller on the pc, and even if their is one it usually doesnt work properly. There is a tool you can download from symantecs website, do a search on there for something like uninstall norton.

That'd be great if I could get I.E. to display web pages.

I have had a similar experience with my PC and ended up wiping it and starting again.

I would do the same in this casee the trouble being the Mother-in-laws PC does not have any start-up disks or the like as it all came pre-loaded.............

You should have some CD's, or the ability to create them.

MS rules state that either,

A) The media to reinstall is provided in the box, or.

B) There should be an application installed on the pc that will allow you to burn your own disks onto DVD.

Packard bell usually provide recovery disks.

Is this something I could download to a USB stik and run from this source as I can not access web pages as above?

Possibly

I did have it on a usb stick for a while but it time lapsed and doesnt work now but there may be a new one now.

Try this Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

It looks like you can download it

I want to know how norton get away with it, their software is like a virus not an anti virus!

Years ago I had problems after upgrading a version of Zone Alarm - as with yours could not load Web pages. Uninstalled it and ditched it.

Norton is mostly Poo - the only good proggy IMHO is Ghost. AVG is pretty good, recently replaced it with Avast Pro which I find even better.

Try disabling or removing Zone Alarm - I think your problem may lie there.

And, another thing, do not get McAffee either - they rank alongside Norton :thumbdwn: for cumbersome and resource consuming.

Right Then,

1. Zone Alarm Removed & I.E functioning properly

2. Restore disks created - Mother-in-law had wondered what the prompts were for

3. Restore point set

4. Norton Removal Tool dowloaded and run - Sucess Norton is gone!!

5. AVG Downloaded and installed

6. Presently Downloading Zone Alarm (again)

Thanks for all the help chaps :orb_phew:

Oh No - Zone Alarm :thumbdwn:

Still, at least you've some Restore points now

Not sure if that's a good thing or not :P

Good

I take it you mean you've installed newer version of ZoneAlarm and all is OK ?

Used McAfee for years, and never had any issues myself.

Have heard spamkiller and privacy tools are the hog reason for suite users tho.

You can get McAfee AV & firewall for free from the Natwest banking pages ;)

Yeah, friend has whole suite - has so many issues, computer runs slow, so many emails keep ending up in Spam bin and on and on. Yet he still insists on using it - and has been for years.

Crazy :thumbdwn:
