PD Tuning Chip Box

Featured Replies

Yes and yes. 38 bhp is probably a tad optimistic, and you can build your own for the price of a resistor and a couple of connectors (EVRY mod). Also be aware that on the modern PD units, they are much more sensitive to the fuel temp sensor outputs and you'll likely trigger the CEL. Can be reset with VAG-COM but something to bear in mind :D

Chris

They do not work, at all.

You might at the most get some extra smoke and a fault code.

Better off with a digital dragon box or DTUK box or a remap.

A bloke at works got one on his A4 Avant and it seems to have made quite a difference, but the one he has only promised 25bhp.

Its only

Based on...........?

Chris

i know someone who had one on his vrs for about 4 months lots of extra kick at lower revs but smoked like a good un, anyhow eventually it fried and set off his fuel temp sensor fault code which he had reset for nothin, was it worth

Well, I just won it, so when it arrives ill give a full report :D

Chris

Based on personal experience and the fact I know how it works and that it just fools the engine into thinking its a bit colder so throwing more fuel in.

so throwing more fuel in.

So it does make a difference then?

Chris

So throwing more fuel in = power increase, unfortunately not.

It just overfuels, which is bad.

They do not under any circumstances have any benefits, if anything at all its a placebo effect to take away the pain of just giving your money away.

Ummm, that's how you improve the performance of a diesel as it runs in an excess of air, more diesel == more power!

Chris

I tested one for a couple of hours before i got my digital dragon tunning box and to be honest i didnt noticed any difference in power or torque and i was put off by the fact it just makes the engine think its cold so sends (sometimes) more fuel in!

The dragon tunning box is much better (definitely notice the difference) but costs alot more, but then again you only get what you pay for:thumbup:

Sorry Chris

But doesn't the Dragon tuning box also fool a sensor and cause the car to overfuel? What resistor was in your cheap resistor box?

Chris

Bit of a vested interest here (as paulk22 will know) but here's my understanding of it (as has no doubt been posted a million billion gazillion times already!):

The EVRY mod / Power Resistor of Doom /

:agree:

this is a pd 130 with a dragon digital tuning box ....so yes it does make a BIG difference

Rob - did they do a run without the box on? Would be interesting to see where in the rev range it develops more power as I assumed that it did it across the whole range, but was tailored to vary the resistance so it didn't ever go outside the permissible values for the fuel temp sensor....

Trouble is the ecu would need to be reset or wait a couple of weeks between runs to get it right so never got round to it ....strange thing is the AMD one click is down by 5 bhp on the dragon box

does make a difference that can be felt

Whats that orange light on your dash for?

Whats that orange light on your dash for?

It shows the traction control is switched off.

Chris

It shows the traction control is switched off.

Chris

Thats the one. Thanks

Anyway, neither will be as effective as a proper remap, and newer PD engines don't like the PRoD approach as much, but I don't believe it's right to say that neither works at all...

Just my 2ps - and I'll know more soon! ;):D

My mate has a Mk4 Golf TDI PD 115 - with one of these boxes in place it provides much more shove at lower revs - net result is more smoke, but some of it is coming from the tyres in the lower gears. ;)

I've plenty of experience of 'tuning boxes' fitted to the older, non-PD, VAG 1.9 TDi engines, and in every incidence I fitted one of these, the car had a lot more lower down torque than standard - the one area they don't really improve much on is outright top speed.

I'm picking up the Fabia 1.4 TDI PD I've bought on Saturday... has anyone bothered to fit a cheapo box to one of these and if so, was it any good?

If not... what are the best experiences people have of getting one of these remapped... and anyone saying 'Don't buy it, save up for a vRS instead if you want more poke'... :finger:

;)

My mum had a 1.4PD Polo for a little while, and had no complaints about the performance! If you can get a tuning box / remap for it, I see no reason why it shouldn't improve the performance to a similar degree as if the relevant mod were applied to a 1.9PD engine...

I think the 1.4 tdi will go to 100 bhp

And the orange light, as Chris said traction control off or as soon as the wheels spin the engine shuts down
