eBay & Cheques

Featured Replies

Hi guys, just a quick question...

Is there any cons or problems (apart from slow turnaround) if someone pays me on ebay with a cheque?

I only take paypal but a bloke emailed me saying he doesnt have pp and wants to send a cheque instead - shall I tell them to shove it?

Take it, bank it, and when it clears, send the item. :) It just means you have to hang on to the item for a bit, and have the inconvenience of having to bank a cheque. :)

Ive done it a few times with no problems as Jason said.

IIRC its not that clear cut. It can be bounced after its apparently cleared. Try the ebay user forums for info/advice

Is it a 'normal' cheque or an e-cheque paid through a Paypal account ?

I was messed about a few times with people who wanted to pay by e-cheque and now when I have an option for payment to me on eBay, I always quote 'NO e-cheques'.

In that scenario you need to place some faith in the feedback system - Keep a note of where you're sending the item to - If anything goes wrong, get some friendly local Briskodians around there. ;)

You can do a "find contact information" on Ebay, using the auction number and the I.D. See if this info looks suspicious. Usually you get a phone number - Check to see if it's genuine. :)

In the past I've actually said that for those with excellent feedback I would post the item on receipt of a cheque, not it's clearance. With Ebay nabbing 3.5% of the fees, on larger value items I'm effectively being paid a few quid for banking a cheque at my local post office. :)

Just remember what Daiking says in his post. I've been stung myself a couple of times, as have a few of my mates, so my rule now is simple, you can stick your cheques up your ar$e!

Even banks and building societies do not consider personal cheques to be a guarenteed form of payment! What does that tell you?

Despite the above, I also employ a simple process, whereby if it's a low value item and the buyer has excellent feedback, then I will usually send it once the funds show in my account, however, if the item is of a higher value, or there is ANY sign of neutral or negative feedback, then forget about it.

Same goes for PayPal payments, if the delivery address is not 'confirmed' with PayPal, then the payment gets refunded. My mate recently 'lost' a Nokia N95, (

Is a bank transfer not an option? Anyone with a UK bank account can do a wire transfer free of charge.

Yeah, they are very low value - old work uniforms of my dads which he doesnt need anymore, but bus spotters find them interesting for some reason:rofl:

All of my high value items have been going only to confirmed addresses tho, so that Im somewhat covered by paypal.

Moral of the story, if you buy from me, it's PayPal, (with confirmed address), Postal Order, Bankers Draft or cash at own risk, and it has never caused me any problems to date, check out my feedback, username smokeysmoo.

Me too, paypal only tho, with 100% feedback, and a confirmed and rated paypal account:thumbup: I even sent out an item where the guy didnt do things properly and paid too little for international postage as I couldnt be chewed getting a negative feedback off him if I tell him to send more money:rofl:

that guy only had one negative, and it was seemingly from an idiot.... so I'd be happy with that :)

I'm selling my Sky HD box on e-bay ;)

No bids yet(As normal no bids until last hour)

I have 30 watchers and 10 people have already asked me to end early and they will pay with Paypal if I send out the same day.................I DON'T THINK SO

I told every person to send me cash RECORDED(which I would pay for) and guess what none of them answered again.....Damm Scammers
