Octavia mk1 symphony changer SURFACE problems

Featured Replies

Hi There,

Apologies for what may be an old question, but i have been getting a SURFACE

error when trying to use the CD Changer. Upon contacting the dealer i have tried cleaning the discs and checking that no water had got in from the rear washer pipe.

I am wondering if this requires a new grundig changer, i use this all the

time and its become a real pain, all help and tips greatly accepted. I've tried

a couple of head units (inc MP3) but the old faithfull symphony has been

good to me and i'd like to keep it if possible

Maybe a good (reasonably priced) auto electrician could take a look, i just don't want to be shafted if its something simple

Cheers

Mine does it quite regular on changing discs, but a good blow out and ca clean of the discs itseems to sort itself out.

Mine hates alot of CDR media, but morrisions own i never had a problem with.

I've had this a few times and blasted it out with compressed air. Soon sorted the problem.

Cheers

yea i can echo the above.

normally if i turn the whole thing off for about 30 seconds and try again all is good

Get this to, take it out and put it in till it works.

Ussually when i change the discs its a bit of a battle, but once working it works till change time again.

Yep mine does that too.

I tend to listen to the discs getting checked (you can hear the whiring) before I try the CD.

cheers,

i'll keep at it, hope it starts working again cause I quite like the unit.

Any further ideas if that fails greatly accepted

I sprayed a small amount of silicone grease (special electric stuff I had kicking around) onto the moving bar on top of the unit. Not sure if this helped it but combined with the above it helped.

I was very surprised to also find a razor blade on this part of the unit when I checked it out. Removed that and it also ran better lol.

I actually got in the boot and checked it out with a torch.

Cheers Alan,

It is a big boot and i want to fix it but my wife might lock me in for a laugh !!!!

I'll try anything to fix it as i don't want to buy a new unit if its not required, it doesn't seem to be making the full whirring sound when the disc cartridge is inserted, it makes a brief noise then nowt

Is it on its road out????

D

I've occasionally had one or both of these issues, but only when I've hit a bump as it was trying to change discs. A few magazine in and outs, and leaving it in, engine off overnight has always been enough to sort the worst ones.

Well after finding a bargin Alpine ill be waving good bye to the symphony head unit and changer :D

Happy days

I've also had SURFACE come up on the display when i've tried playing a copied CD;) .I took the CD out and it's been fine with every other disc. It might just be the disc you're playing???

I agree, different discs, different results with the CD Changer. Morrisons own are a good safe buy.
