Are my Tyres Legal?

Featured Replies

Basically this is my front left tyre, at 6800 Miles,

It's a Kumho Powerstar 758. It's basically gone totally bald on the outer edge of the tyre, but the middle bits are okay. The wear is to the point where the lettering on the sidewall is dissapearing at the top. The Blocks of tread are starting to peel away from the main part of the tyre and theres a couple of chunks missing from a few blocks of tread, the other side is pretty much the same, but are they still legal?

No there are not!

Get them changed NOW!

Could I not swap the rear ones with them?

No it would still be illegal. You tracking needs checking as well.

Whether they're legal or not, which they probably aren't (I don't know the rules) you certainly don't want to be driving with them; I've been in a car which has had a tyre delaminate, and I'm never going to put myself in that position by having crap tyres.

What do you reccomend replacing them with, is Kumho a good brand?

Cheap if you are thinking of selling:

- Falken 512,

- Avon

- Khumo

etc

I'd definately be getting a 4 wheel alignment check too.

Do you tend to chuck the car round corners? If so, I'd recommend getting some "reinforced" tyres which have a stiffer sidewall and will flex much less (and hence reduce the wear on the outer edges)....

Chris

Man they are in bits, would tracking affect that part of the tyre? Me thinks they were run while flat, as a matter of interest whats the inside edges like?

They DO look like they've been run for quite a while at way too low a pressure.....

1.6 mm over 75% of the tread at the centre. no chunks missing and no damage to side walls. i think those are the rules.

and they are fubar.

Well, the steering wheel allways needs to be turned slightly to the right to keep the car straight, but the dealer did the tracking and they said it was out, but within it's tolerances, but they reset it anyway.

The car squeals at about 20mph on smooth surfaces, So I am thinking that they haven't done the tracking properly.

As for pressure, I checked them and they were at 35psi, so I reduced them to 30 which is what it says inside the door. The sidewalls do press easily and I think they flex when the car is chucked into a corner.

It keeps understeering on wet roundabouts at safe and sensible speeds, followed by a really nasty vibration through the car. Also, if it's connected at all the front disks were replaced at 4.4k miles due to warping, and I think they need doing again. I Jacked the car up and span the wheel and it is rubbing intermittently on the brake, is this also to do with tracking?

Those tyres are seriously dangerous and could get you into a lot of trouble. Apart from the risk of accident, if you are stopped by police you get points for *each* illegal tyre so that's a quick way of losing your licence.

Are you sure the pressure gauge was accurate? The sidewalls shouldn't be that soft. I suspect they were at 30 and you have dropped them to 25.

You need four new tyres and the tracking check.

there is also the risk of blow outs with tyres like that :-o I'd be praying to get to the end of my journey if they were mine (im also not religious).

Mate buy some Michellin Exalto 2 these last 40k + unless you drive like a retard on the road.

Your tracking needs checking, the tyres are worn nearly to the wire your risking your life & other road users just for the sake of trying to get a few humdered miles more out of the set - Ive heard of being misorly before (like me) but when it comes to being safe its crazy.

If in doubt though you could take it to Kwi fit or another for a tyre check - however note if they deem your car to be illegal they can refuse to let the car out of the garage until you change the illegal tyre.

Not sure what car you drive but I got a set of 175 13's for a Rover 214 fully balanced and new valve for

PE2 40k? You'll be lucky. more like 20k on the front.

They are also almost

Mine have lasted 40k and counting with still over 4mm all round and thats on a modified Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo.

No disrespect but you must drive very gently, I got about 25k out of a set which did mostly motorway driving and then a bit of making progress.

I certainly wouldn't say I am hard on the tyres, and can make others last 40k no problem, (HX MXM for example)

I'd agree that the PE2 is a good tyre, but i really don't think it will stay 40k unless you are very light on the tyres.

Did you rotate your tyres to get 25k?

I'm thinking you might have a tendency to drive outside the safe limits of the car to cause all these problems. SWMBO has done 38k in her Getz (and she doesn't hang about!) and it's on original fronts (low - due replacement before winter) & original disks & pads.

In fact short of servicing it's never had any work done

I got 52k from a set of Michelin Energy tyres on my Clio 1.5 dCi. Most of that was on single carriageway roads. Got 57k from the rears.

Bloody expensive though.

No that was 25k without changing, then the rears went on the front and new ones on rear.

Nope, get them changed.

You could try eTyres.co.uk - lowest prices on car tyres, van tyres, 4X4 tyres & car batteries mobile tyre fitting service they are a mobile outfit and they come out to you and they fit, balance and take the old tyres away for a good price.

I don't drive like a nutter so my rears have just been changed at 51,000 and these were the original mitchelin pilot primacy.

I get the Goodyear Eagle F1's for about

To get a small city cars tyres in that condition over so few miles (is it just one thats in that condition or both fronts?).

If both fronts are like that then your driving isnt suitable for the public highway - it is clear that either your tracking is out, your running the tyre underinflated or your racing the car hard around corners or possibly all of the above together.

ive known rear tyres on a Citroen Saxo VTR to last 80,000 miles - and yes he drove mostly motorway miles but he always checked tyre pressure and didnt drive like a wannabie racing driver.

Or it could just be a manufacturing defect with the tyre(s)...

Rob.
