Paint issue - what is it (photos)

Featured Replies

Nope, still ongoing. The dealer forgot to inform Skoda there was a paint issue so that delayed everything by 2 months. They then asked for a photo, then a paint inspection. Cutting a long story short, two letters to Skoda, two letters back from Skoda and they are adament it is a stonechip or something caused by a third party. And they will not let me look at the paint inspection report due to "data protection" (see my current thread about a trade-in value). What the DPA has to do with it I don't know.

Well if Skoda say it's only a stone chip I can pay a few quid to Chipsaway or whoever. But if when it comes to the repair it is something else I'll be gunning for someone.

So in summary, nice car, let down by Skoda and their dealer.

I think its poor that they haven't offered to look at this closer for you.

Just a word of warning about ChipsAway..... although they do very good and invisible repairs, in areas that take a battering (ie front bumper) the paint just isn't hard wearing enough and soon begins to almost wear through. I had them do some work on my Leon (Black Magic) and the front bumper looks awful 18 months later as do the wing mirrors up close. That said, these were not stone chips but scuffs that they sprayed over a larger area. Still, they are cheap and the other areas they did for stone chips and smaller scuffs in less exposed areas (rear bumper, front wing stonechips, tailgate scratches) still look good/invisible.

Why not see if the dealership will have Chipsaway (or whoever they use) to do the work with it only being chargeable to you should there be nothing under the paint? Surely that way everyone would be happier ?

I've been to trading standards and they advised I don't communicate with Skoda UK anymore and just deal with the dealer as it is with them who I have the contract with which is a fair comment. Trouble is dealer will only do what Skoda says but thats the way it is.

The dealer did say they would give me the cheapest price for doing the stonechip repair themselves. I might see how much that is and then let them go ahead and they can deal with whatever they find underneath the paint - I'm only paying for a stonechip to be sorted as per the VW paint inspectors opinion aren't I?

I still fail to see this is a stonechip but then the dealer can't charge the earth for doing such a small repair and if they do give a large quote I'll know there is something else. Suppose it will make them "show their cards".

Under the DPA you are allowed to see any data any organisation holds about you.

Maximum charge for this 'service' is/was

I too have a similar problem with my five month old Cappuccino coloured Elegance. Again, I only noticed it months after buying it. I must admit I have not yet done anything about it, principally because it is pretty unnoticeable, and I fear that any 'cure' may be worse than the symptom. However it is in the same position as yours is, and is definitely NOT stone chips, as the blemish is under the lacquer coat.

Your dealer sounds like a useless piece of ****. I would keep banging on the door until somebody gets it sorted and if they still won't budge, see a solicitor.

As for them giving you the cheapest price etc......they will use a body shop who will charge full whack. Can't imagine the dealer slashing any price they get.

4stroke4 - any pics you can posts as if we have identical marks it could be the ammo I need!

Anyway I'm getting cheesed off with it and don't have the time to worry about it. Skoda will not send out the paint inspector to meet me and discuss his opinion so that's not in the least bit customer friendly. I have to take the car into the dealer so the paint guy they use for preping used cars can see how much it will cost for me to go through the dealer, although i will check I am getting the repair done at a cheaper price seeing all the run around I've had and lack or dedication from the dealer (i.e. them sitting on the issue for 2 months and doing sod all).

If the price is too high I'll go direct to chipsaway or such like, but I'd prefer to use someone the dealer trusts.

Seriously don't get it repaired, it is a fault, reject the car and then make them prove is wasn't a defect.

I was thinking of coming back to Skoda, but their attitude seems quite bad recently, with the stutter, fabia leaks and this.

It's not the problems that put me off, it's the way they are dealing with them.

Here is what I would do:

Print these two threads off and show them to the person who you have been dealing with at the delership.
