Octavia Estate - Rear Speakers

Featured Replies

Hi all, just joined the Skoda club with a TDI SLX Estate. Absolutely delighted with it apart from the Radio/CD Speakers.

No Haynes manual available to help me out so I don't want to start something I can't finish, therfore any help with the following questions much appreciated.

1) I want to replace all with decent stuff. I've got to the front door speakers OK, how do I get to the tweeters. Just the cover just prise off?

2) How do I get to the rear speakers? Ive got to the tweeters, but the main speakers seem to be inside the shelf. How easy is this to remove?

3) As for the Radio/CD itself, I have a fairly good Panasonic multi-changer in my old Astra which I plan to re-fit. Should this be straightforward or do I need to get it done by a pro?

Thanks in advance,

Joe

Rear speakers are not quite as easy. If memory serves me right, drop the seats down, and remove the trims at the side if the seats/side panels.then you can remove the panel holding the rear speakers. Quite a few awkward screws to get to, and nuts holding the speakers in place. I think they were or are 6x4 speakers.( i think so dont hold me to it).

All in all I remember it being a nice challenge when I took mine out, then decided I couldnt be arsed anyway.( Seeing as usually the wife tells me to TURN IT DOWN as the kids are in the back!!)

Cheers

Joe,

Welcome to Briskoda, good to have another Northener on board! :D

I'm not really in too much of a position to give advice on the

estate, as I don't really know much about it...however, I would

say it might be worth leaving the front tweeters alone, as

they're not all that bad. The rear ones (on the hatch at least)

cause problems as they're quite near the driver's ear.

Not sure about the CD changer, would depend on what was

already in the car. I also went the Astra->Octavia route

though

If you want to see what an Octavia with only improved speakers

sounds like, come along to one of the Northern Thursday

Night meets near Bolton...

I was thinking of buying something from the Kenwood custom range of component speakers, the KFC-P727EC seems to be the right one. Even if the front tweeters are half decent, I may as well keep them matched and put some proper branded ones in.

The car already has the Skoda MS411 system by Grundig. Not bad, but not a patch on my old FX65. Apart from which, I really want to keep a cassette facility.

Tell me more about these Thurday night meets....

The KFC-P727EC look like pretty serious kit, so if you're going

down that road then upgrading the head unit may well be a good

idea.

The Thrusday night things are pretty informal - just turn up at

the pub for a drink/talk/drive. Details are given through private

messaging for security reasons, as it would be rather unfortunate

if a bunch of scallies came up and nicked all the Skodas ;)

I'm open to any suggestions for speakers. The main reason for thinking Kenwood is a) Having had some before, I know they're OK and easy to fit etc and B) Not really sure who else does any custom fit ones for the Octy.

Want to spend as little as poss obviously, but get half decent kit in the process. Not top of the range, but not bottom either. The likelhood is that I will be keeping the car for a good few years, anything I install now will be there for the duration.

I can't understand why it seems to hard to find any info on this car. I cannot believe that Haynes have not done (and don't plan to) do a manual !!!

Well, the favourite front speaker of the forum seems to be the

Infinity 652i (about 60 quid from Halfords, cheaper mail order).

This produces a good quality sound and, being 2-way, has a

tweeter which can be angled to get the best sound.

If you leave the existing tweeter in the door mirror too, it

gives a good crisp sound. :speaker:

However, it would be good if someone installed something

different, just to see what kind of sound it makes! :D

Hi Joe...welcome to Briskoda.

my previous motor was a TDI SLX estate as well....great car! I changed the original Grundig for a Pioneer head-unit and autochanger.

Had is fiited for me and had the autochanger put in the "cubby hole" on the left hand side in the boot. Nice and neat and no one can see it.

The original HU, IMHO, wasn't particularly good. The Pioneer HU did produce a better sound however the usual Skoda bass distortion did rear it's head.

Changed the fronts for some Sony jobs which where better and easy to fit.......just remove speaker grill, unscrew and replace.

I didn't replace the rear ones as they seemed adequate.

A lot of Briskodians don't like the treble bias due to the rear tweeter being sited almost by the drivers ear in the rear door. Some say disconnect it. Myself I have turned down the treble bias and have the system bias more to the front.

Cheers.

Adrian.

The rears are 6X4 -I changed mine for some Pioneer units, but they didn't make a big difference. I don't think a 6X4 speaker is really big enough to give a huge output, so probably not a mod worth busting a gut over.

OK, I'm halfway there in that the old stereo is installed and I've put some Infinity's in the front. Nice sound, but still little if any bottom end.

So I guess it's time to start thinking about what to replace the rear's with.
