UK'S SAFEST DRIVERS ANNOUNCED

New survey details the good, the bad and the ugly

Avoid Mancunian hairdressers. You have been told.

Beware of female Mancunian hairdressers in BMWs and male chefs driving any type of Lexus in Oldham - they’re most likely to crash into your car.

Women’s insurer, Diamond, has published a survey of Britain’s best and worst drivers and it makes for some funny reading.

Other than the two mentioned above, you’d also be best to avoid builders in Blackburn driving Lotuses or warehousemen in Manchester driving around in MGs (possibly in various states of tune). As far as women go, look out for sales assistants driving MGs in Bolton and Honda-driving receptionists from Blackpool.

The survey also revealed who was safest on the black top. Policemen driving Skodas in Inverness ranked very high, as did Saab piloting computer programmers in Dumfries. Or Volvo-driving engineers in Aberdeen.

The safest ladies are teaching assistants driving Saabs and based in Perth, as well as Volvo-driving accountants in Dundee and Smart Car owning secretaries from Inverness.

Why do the safest groups all seem to drive really boring cars?

You saying Skodas are boring? :D

Mein apologies, Kaiser.

It vos zee peoples who wrote zee arteecle :P

But it seems I have to be extra careful of Lexi (?)

*cough*the _uk is a clue*cough* :p

I thought it was interesting that a 'ladies' insurance company would dare suggest that there are women drivers who are anything less than perfect examples of crash-free motoring...

Looks like all the best examples live in Scotland.

Not near me they don't! :(

  • 1 month later...

I'm glad to hear that Scottish Policemen are (allegedly) the safest drivers. Being one myself (a Scottish Policeman that is) I will endeavour to keep this stat accurate once I get my Octy II vRS next month.

Doesn't mean I can't have fun though. Speed doesn't kill; it's being silly behind the wheel is what does it.

The last survey I read (a few years back) said that women tended to have more accidents than men but they were minor, whereas men tended to write off the car more often.

I wonder if that's still the case.

Hmm, here we go - all the Scots police etc pile in to get the credit

As far as the insurance company is concerned, a claim is a claim and your gonna get stung. So you'd be as well make it a biggie and get value for money!!!

I wondered how they measured drivers? Purely based on claim history (maybe taking into account annual mileage?)? It's interesting that the safest cars are the ones which sell in relative small numbers too....

I've seen pretty much every make of car driven badly (well it's a tough job, but someone has to do it ;)) and I've seen pretty much every make of car driven well, imho.

As with all of this "research", taken with a big pinch of salt ;)

Chris

Isn't traffic density lower in their areas of safest drivers? My guess is that it's just easier not to hit another car when there are fewer other cars to hit...

IMHO I think what makes a safe driver, is his or her realisation that they are not as good a driver as they think.

As much as I hate to admit it, I think this is where the male / female divide comes in. Women tend to do the silly minor things, reversing into supermarket trollies etc but men do the bigger more dangerous stuff as the male ego convincves them that they are the best driver on earth.

It took a 4 week advanced drivers course as part of my work to make me realise just how bad my driving was (and I thought it was ace beffore)

I am confident that my driving is far safer than ever before even though it's probably faster. I repeat what I said in a previous post - Speed doesn't kill.

Wise words there Mondo! Every day is a school day when driving :D

Sure is Chris, but school can be loads of fun can't it.

So, by interpolation, I'm a safe driver. I live between Inverness and Dundee, and am a Skoda driving programmer.

Depends how much time you spend dodging speed cameras on the A90 / A96 I guess.

None at all. And who said what value of "live between" I was using? In fact, I forgot to put his on my last - ;)

I knew my lateral thinking would get me into trouble one day
