The nights are drawing in - time for a light bulb thread...

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just had one of my Philips Silverline bulbs go on me and was wondering what are the best bulbs on the market at the moment, have they advanced on these yet since our last dark spell?

(H7 fittament before anyone asks :P)

Or should I just go for rally bulbs :D?

Cheers all

I've got Philips Xtreme and I'm not entirely happy with them.

They look really really good nice and white and vision isnt bad but Ive got these annoying scattery walls of light either side of the car which is offputting whilst driving.

Is some of that down to the head light design rather than the bulb - you just didn't notice it in the original yellow? ;)

Well I only drove once with the original bulbs on and it was dusk not dark so maybe ;)

i have the 50% brighter jobbies and seem to have a black spot in the middle just above where the xenons shine, basically makes the full beam a waste of time even through the bulbs have beem inserted correctly.

Expecting my Philips xtreme's tomorrow (today, just looked at watch) Will report back after fitting. Got 'em for £26.99 free p&p.

will have 2 put 1 of originals in now... :(

Has anyone changed their lamps on a Fabia? Is it a fiddly job or pretty straight forward?

It's not the worst, you loose a bit of skin off the back of your hand IIRC

If you have Xenons however you might want to try something a little easier like reversing Global warming or finding the solution to world peace

You should be able to change Halogens in about 10mins for both sides,

Xenons aren't that bad just set aside about 30mins, Be careful with the ballasts, I can't imagine 25Kv coursing through you body to be a pleasurable experiance:eek:.

And before anyone points out it's the current not the voltage that gets you, I still wouldn't like to be Tazer'd by my car :thumbdwn:

Fuel filter on tdi does make things a bit more tricky

Prefer the Philips Night Vision GT150 to the extreme bulbs and they are cheaper to boot. Osram silverstars are about half the price of the Extreme bulbs, but not quite as bright.

I would say combined with a rally bulb main beam would be a good choice for good visibility,

If anyone does install the extremes and gets walls of light either side on country lanes etc then can they post as its what im getting.

Look forward to hearing that review.

Are you moving on from standard to these or from an aftermarket product?

I'm getting sideways scatter on whatever the standard new fit bulbs are.

seems to be more poor design of the the headlight than a problem with the bulbs

I did today, swapped the originals for a new set of Phillips BlueVision sidelights, main and full beam bulbs.

The right hand headlight was a right job. There is almost no room to do anything, I took one look at it and almost balked. Getting the bulb fittings out was incredibly difficult, (I have big hands :P ) and I was swearing like a trooper within minutes. Not only could I not get the main beam bulb back in properly, I then proceeded to switch on the engine to test full beam with a screwdriver resting on the battery cover. The vibration sent it straight down into the engine. I never did use the screwdriver.

I had to remove the panel under the car to get it back.

But it looks much, much nicer now. Although I am still disappointed with full beam, there is indeed a gap in light, even though the bulbs are positioned correctly, and although the road is lit wonderfully in front of the car, there is little long distance light thrown ahead.

But I'm still happy with the change in colour.

Hi, I'm new, by the way. Nice to meet you all.

Hello :)

Just bought some Halfrauds Super Bright bulbs (or whatever they call them) ready for the Prague trip. Don't know if they're any good, but they are buy one get one free (I said, you buy one...).

Annoying isnt it?

two days ago i put Phillips 80% brighter and rally bulbs 100w in my fabia Vrs and the difference is amazing, i travel 25 miles to work down country lanes and unlit areas and the extra distance in vision really helps

I did notice that on two occasions i was flashed by other drivers even though i only had dipped beams (Phillips 80%) in use

The rally bulbs are great sooo much extra vision over the original bulbs

do you get walls of scattered light at either side on country lanes?

Philips X-Treme H7, Got em', Fitted em' & tried em'.

Fitting took 35mins, No injuries, But an unbelievable amount of swearing:(

The light produced is crisper & whiter and is thrown out further. But i wouldn't go as far as to say there's an 80% improvement.

These were a replacement for OEM mainbeam bulbs.

The photo's not the best, If requested i'll take a couple more (stationary this time  ) so you can get impression of throw & distance

I fitted the X-tremes to the MR2. The difference going to these from Osram Silverstars was quite noticeable. Light seems brighter and whiter. Throw wise, the projector assembly of the MR2 needed adjustment upward slightly. Top edge of the beam pattern cutoff is slightly less well defined. They are definitely the most impressive halogen H7 I have used. Mains in the MR2 are 65W Toshiba 9011 HIR bulbs. These are truly amazing. Much brighter than X-Tremes or 100W Rallys.

The Osram Silverstars I run in the Fabia are a very big improvement on the stock bulbs, so the X-tremes should be a really big improvement. Also run Rallys in the Fabia main beams. When the Silverstars blow I will fit the X-tremes in the Fabia as well.

You have Rallys for main and Silverstards for full?

I have the following setup:-

Side - little piddly Philips free 5W5 bulbs that came free with...

Main - Philips Blue Vision H7

Full - Philips Blue Vision H4

Fog - Philip Blue Vision H4

(I think are the right sizes )

I did buy some 5W5 LED clusters but they had 9 LEDS so wouldn't fit

I didn't notice the walls of scattered light at the side of the road. I think that its probably the shape of the lenses rather than the bulb and was never noticed before as the light just wasn't as bright.
