nearly had side window smashed by stone from a lorry

Featured Replies

driving on my way to work this morning a lorry passed on the other side of the carrigeway and in doing so trew up quite a large stone which smacked my side window, and now i have a bloody big stone chip on my side window. I am lucky it didn`t smash as it was quite big. Another thing is i sometimes have that window open and if i did i would have been smacked in the head and i dread to think what would have resulted if that happened as i was doing about 50mph at the time

Yep mate it's a nasty experience. It has happened to my Mum on Glasgow's Kingston Bridge, where a truck threw up a stone and it smashed her windscreen. This is on the motorway doing 50mph and with no hard shoulder she had to keep driving to the next exit and park it. Very dangerous.

I hate, absolutely hate getting hit by stones.... The worst one's are the one's that you don't see and just make a huge BANG! and then you're left frantically scanning all the screen to look for cracks. :( The last time this happened to me I think it must have hit the A-pillar because the screen was untouched... phew*

The last time a stone actually cracked the screen I saw it coming, but obviously could do nothing to avoid it... It kind of flew toward my car in slow motion and left a nice wound which later spread nicely... :(

Never had a side window impact but it sounds nasty! In 25 degrees C I imagine that window would have been down!

A friend of mine's younger brother was hit in the head by a large stone that went through the windscreen and then his skull.

He still has the scars and a rather odd shaped head in places.

I don't know what's scarier -the one that comes out of nowhere with a massive "CRACK!" or the one that you see almost floating in the air, waiting for you to catch up with it, with nowhere to go to avoid it.

Then there's the half-brick that's been stuck between the twin rear wheels of a big truck, and comes flying out. It's a long time ago (it just missed me), but I still give building site trucks a wide berth on the road.

About 15 years ago, my car was struck by a piece of metal which flew out of a scrap metal lorry. It was a windy day, but the scumbag driving the lorry should have had a cover over the top.

The piece would have been about 18 x 10 inches and was heading for my windscreen - I slammed on the brakes, tried to duck, and at the last second, a gust carried it to the left which resulted in a scratched front door and a hole punched in the rear wing - but at least my head remained intact.

On a simiular theme, I was travelling home from Leeds on Easter Sunday, going along a stretch of the M62, a pigeon suddenly appeared from the side, both my wife and myself ducked, but it didn't touch the car - it could have only been inches from in front of the windscreen as it passsed in from of me.

The first time I went to Florida, we did strike a bird, made a big dint in the front of the hire car (Astrovan IIRC).

pigeons to me, seem to be epitomy of the term "bird brain" :D

I've never managed to hit one that's stood in the road, because I either slow down significantly or they get some sense and take off sharpish. However I still see many carcasses on the roads, especially pheasants. I remember seeing a male & female pheasant carcase once, which left me wondering what they were doing that was so exciting they omitted to see the car coming... :D:o

Always been nervous about this sort of thing after the Moggy screen was hit when going up to Scotland maxed out at 80mph ( felt really quick  ) . The screen wasn't laminated so the whole thing came in on me which scared the :dung: out of me and also meant that, after i had steered it to the nearest exit, got Autoglass to dig in their archives for a replacement and got it fitted, I had a quite a long clean up process to get rid of the glass that was everywhere in the car (and in my possessions). Very scary indeed ... the noise when it happened got me more than the actual glass cutting the face etc.

Hitting pigeons in flight is quite alarming too (even more so for the poor bird) - not to mention whoever's behind you as they're engulfed by a mass of feathers...

"Floating Stones" are the worst - you know what's going to happen but can't do anything about it... :(

I used to have a green Cavalier that was a target for birds. I don't know if the colour meant that they couldn't see it, but I had:

1. a pheasant ran in the road, bending the front spoiler (and itself)

2. a crow took off from the verge ahead of me, and hit the windscreen, taking off both wipers and leaving the contents of its guts all over the screen

3. in one day, I hit three different birds while driving across Cambridgeshire.

That car was bad for local wildlife........

I hit one last summer when I was off taking the boat out for a day out. I was blasting along doing 80 and bird just kept coming! I ended up ducking down (still traviling along), natural reaction I suppose ! I only glanced the poor thing seems airflow had taken it round the car and had only cliped it at the top of the windscreen.
