Flats on inside edge of tyres

Featured Replies

My Octavia came with Brigestones. I've always thought them noisy and harsh.

Anyway driving across Spain and France recently the tyres made far more than their usual racket on each different type of tarmac. Gave my wife a headache with the nasty drubbing noise. The drone came and went (slightly) with speed. Then I notice that on rapid deceleration say from 100 down to say 85 my steering wobbled --not a lot.

Thats it I said and went to a reliable tyre dealer for balancing.

The fitter slowly ran his palm round my front tyres and said that the inside edges of both front tyres were more worn than the outside edges and on one tyre there were two places were the thread was worn down like a flat spot. Not massively but even I could see the difference and a good tyre tread depth gauge would certainly have measured it. The tyres had done 20000 miles

He then found that one of the rear tyres had got two patches were the thread was worn lower than the rest. But the inside edge was not more worn. No-one in the depot had any explanation and all said they had never seen anything like it before. Do they always say that?

The bottom line was 5 new tyres -Michelins and they have transformed the car . The drone has gone at all speeds and I agree with my wife the car is more comfortable over less than perfect road surfaces, like the UK.

Does anyone have the faintest idea what could have been the cause?

I should add that I do not take part in rallying or racing just boring everyday motoring with twice yearly trips across europe. :(

What model do you have ( engine/ estate/hatch )and size of tyres and what type of Michelins did you go for.

Our superb developed a drone, again like yours the rear tyres didnt appear to be exactly round causing un even wear, new Michelins all round & again car transformed. Like you no idea what caused it

Interestinglt the original tyres were Michelins, waiting to see how these fare

Thanks for replies.

Tyres Mich Energy 195/65 R15 91 H Made with love in Italy

No idea about the Bridgestones apart from the name and size. I think (??) they were Italian as well.

I'm sure it is true that some tyres suit some cars and not others. But what do I know: I've always had Michelins by choice apart from when I was very young and poor and always had Henleys (is that the correct spelling?--made by Avon but cheaper)

sounds like a slight balance problem. You did well to get that sort of mileage though...

Sounds like track or camber (if theres such an adjustment on the fronts).

There has been a couple of instances of rear Camber adjustment being needed on the rear, for excessive inside wear. Stu had mentioned it on his site IIRC.
