Cost of fitting xenons on vRS

is this only possible on new from factory or can you request for them fitted still?

I'm planning on getting a 2nd hand vRS, hopefully to buy within end of the month, however, if i request for xenons to be fitted to the car, this possible? i been told that it costs about 500quid for the unit, but how much to fit? i take it has to be skoda that can fit them right? thanks

You cant get them unless they are a factory order

Aftermarket HID headlamps

In the Department's view it is not legal to sell or use after market HID lighting kits, for converting conventional Halogen headlamps to HID Xenon. If a customer wants to convert his vehicle to Xenon HID he must purchase completely new Xenon HID headlamps. The reason for this is that the existing lens and reflector are designed around a Halogen filament bulb, working to very precise tolerances. If one places a HID "burner" (bulb) in the headlamp, the beam pattern will not be correct, there will be glare in some places and not enough light in other places within the beam pattern.

The following is the legal rationale:

The Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 regulate the situation in the UK.

Under these Regulations, HID/Gas Discharge/Xenon headlamps are not mentioned and therefore they are not permitted according to the strict letter of the law.

However new vehicles have HID headlamps. This is because they comply to European type approval Regulations. The UK cannot refuse to register a vehicle with a European type approval. These are to ECE Regulation 98 (for the HID headlamps which are tested on a rig in a laboratory) and ECE Regulation 48 (Lighting Installation on the vehicle).

For the after market, a used vehicle cannot obtain type approval because it is only applicable for new vehicles. However we feel that saying "HID is banned in the after market" would not be reasonable. Instead we should make analogies with new vehicles. It would be reasonable to require HID in the after market to meet the same safety standards as on new vehicles. The same level of safety should apply.

Therefore a HID headlamp unit sold in the after market should:

1. be type approved to ECE Regulation 98 as a component.

2. when fitted to the vehicle should enable ECE Regulation 48 to be complied with (although no government inspection will take place).

3. Comply with RVLR as far as "use" is concerned.

In practice this means:

1. The headlamp unit (outer lens, reflector, bulb) shall be type approved to ECE 98 and be "e-marked" to demonstrate this. That can only be done by the headlamp supplier - Hella, Valeo etc. who must test the headlamp in an independent laboratory.

2. Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling (which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension - some expensive estate cars have "self-levelling suspension" and that is adequate). Also the dipped beam must stay on with the main beam.

3. The headlamp must be maintained in good working order, kept clean, and aligned/adjusted correctly like any other headlamp.

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is an offence to supply, fit or use vehicle parts which are not legal.

In summary it is not permitted to convert an existing halogen headlamp unit for use with HID bulbs. The entire headlamp unit must be replaced with one designed and approved for use with HID bulbs and it must be installed in accordance with the rules stated above.

DO NOT fit HID's to the standard Fabia lights.

They are Dual Epsilloid lights, the light is reflected from the back of the unit then scattered across the road. It works to precise tolerances and fitting HID's blinds other road users!

You can just about get away with it with projector lenses as the beam is concentrated, however even then it is still a gamble as you don't have the washers and levellers.

I would say that anything is possible - but you would need a large wallet to get that job done correctly and as said already to become legal.

If you fit an aftermarket HiD kit you run the risk of 1: Having a prohibition served on the car, so potentially the vehicle would be immobilised on the roadside (or recovered) until the headlights were converted back to original.

2: MOT testing stations (afaik currently have no instructions to fail a vehicle) unless the alignments out, But lets face it, It won't take them long to amend the rules!

3: You run the risk of cooking the ECU! (dependant of kit fitted (seen it happen on a 06 55 Audi A3))

Apparently the ECU's not very fond of huge voltage spikes!

In summary if they're not factory fitted i wouldn't bother way too many things to go against you.

nah, i meant, can i not get the original oem skoda xenons fitted? either get the parts and done elsewhere or just get them fitted by skoda themselves?

im visiting a garage next weekend, hope to buy, but was debating (if possible) to get them to fit xenons to the vRS.

yes but it would be a ******* to do I think.

all the wiring would probably need uprating in some way and you'd probably need the bumper drilled to fit the washers and new hose run through the engine bay.

If the parts didnt kill you, the cost of labour would.

I have seen a Fabia with OEM units plugged into the original connections and it works perfectly. Had I not seen it with my own eyes I would have, and in fact have done, said it's not possible. However, reading the DoT regs it wouldn't be legal as you wouldn't have self leveling. You could over come the washer problem.

To be honest if you got hold of some projector lenses and didnt have the washer or levellers fitted you would most likely get away with it.

LOADS of people on the Corsa C forum fit them to their Corsa's (the 6k and 8k kits) and have never been stopped by the police nor failed MOT (the only thing they needed to have done was have the lights algined at an MOT station)

I was told by the Skoda dealership (Robinson's in Norwich) when I asked about it that (and I near enough quote) "You can't get the Xenon's fitted by Skoda UK on to a car that didn't have Xenons from the factory"

So I just replaced my bulbs with uber bright ones!

with regards to my last post the ECU thing, it wasn't the ECU it turned out to be 3 relays and the wiper motor, the bill £600

Maybe if you removed absolutely every part you needed - ie not just lights, but including any controllers that might need recoded + ride height sensors, washer + ???? - and then modified your existing wiring harness where necessary (excluding any sections that you removed from the donor car). Yes quite a challenge - and if as you have infered, you don't have the resources to do all this work yourself, pay someone to do the extracting of all required bits from the donor car THEN fit them into your car, including time for replacing harnesses and modifying any left in - cheaper to trade the car for one that had option fitted at factory - I would think. Sorry but true, if it was possible and not TOO expensive - and if the parts were available in another market, I would have modified my wife's Polo 9N.
