Vw/skoda Ecu Update

Featured Replies

I have only had my 2000 Octavia SLX 110BHP for two days and already I am having problems. It dies/loses power if you take it to 4000rpm and then smokes, it seems fine if you keep it to 3000rpm.

Please can anyone help ???

I am even more worried by the statement below that I found on the web. Could this really be true ?

"Power loss on TDI 110s down to same problem as on Golf Mk IV. VAG acknowledges a fault with the ECU (038 906 018 BM) and specifies an upgraded unit (038 906 018 GQ) at £695.00 + VAT. According to VAG technical, this problem will eventually occur with all ECUs of the 'BM' part number."

There are a whole host of things that could cause the problems you mention. Before you get all depressed about needing a new ECU you need to get a diagnostic check carried out. This can be by a dealer, independant or someone with VAG-COM.

It could be something as simple as a £75 MAF or a split hose.

Thanks Stu

I have found that the oil has been overfilled I am sure it is not related but it could be. Read somewhere that this could destroy the cat or the Lamda, therefore at high revs is the cat too blocked to take the exhaust gas ouput and therefore the engine management shuts the engine down ?

Over filled oil, I take it you had it serviced at a skoda dealership? Same happened to me, but noticed it fairly quickly and also before thrashing it.

Couldn't be arsed removing protective cover from under the engine so ended up syphoning it out

Where are you - are you close to anyone with a VAG-COM diagnosis thingy?

I can't see that ECU part number listed for the Octavia.

Dirty fuel filter is my guess

Fuel filter has been changed recently, could it be air in the fuel line.

I think the air would eventually bleed through. The other option is the maf but it would be better to get your fault codes read.

Deffo wont be a lambda probe, you dont have one.

Sounds like a MAF to me.

My friend is hopefully coming down to Swindon next Sunday, and I could get him to bring my hand held code reader if that helps. You would have to meet up with him. Would only take 5 to 10 mins to do. You will need to find where your diagnostic socket is.

Got a clean air filter in the thing?

I know the 110TDI does smoke a lot getting up the rev range and doesn't really pull past 4k RPM anyway

Really!? Mine doesn't smoke to notice, and definitely revs over 4_000, but I'm not sure how much, because I rarely take it there, and when I do I'm more concerned with driving than watching the rev counter.

Fault code is 17656 which indicates lack of fuel at higher revs makes sense with the symptoms. VAG-COM gives the symptoms as Loss of Power at high engine speeds and engine difficult to start , which if I'am honest I have not noticed as I am so new to the Octavia.

But thinking about it I have noticed a certain reluctance to start that i did not expect.

Cause could be Pump Timing or Injection start solenoid failure, at worst the Fuel pump will need to be checked and reconditioned/repaired.

Car has been returned to the trader and have my money back as he was not prepared to pay for the full cost of the repairs or have the diesel pump inspected.

Just to add to the misery this car caused me the power steering rack went last week.

Still, sorry chaps no longer a Skoda owner anymore, got a boring old MkIV Golf Tdi, not as quick as the SLX but loads of goodies as it is a SE and love the funky blue dash lights

Thanks to all who contributed to my posts. I will stay a member as the Golf has the same mechanicals obviously

Lets hope it doesnt suffer the same problems :)

If overfilled with oil then put a bottle of CATACLEAN £20 thru system this will hopefully clean the ceramic cells and push the oil deposits out and save you the cost of a cat. It will bring down emisions aswell at mot but well worth it for peace of mind.

FORGET what i typed i should really read all post before replying
