Scout Tdi Fuel consumption

Featured Replies

I have had my Scout Tdi (140) for just over 2 months and 6000 miles including a 3 week trip to Bavaria and Switzerland.

So here's the fuel consumption, brim to brim. Average 43.46 mpg (very close to the Government combined figure). Best 48.44 mpg on German autobahns at indicated 75-80 mph (where traffic permitted and using cruise control). Worst 39.30 mpg while running-in. All of these are with the climate control on at 20 degrees C (not Econ setting).

The speedometer over-reads by 5% (measured at 50, 60 & 70 mph on the motorway against the distance posts).

The trip computer is very optimistic, on average indicating 9.5% better consumption than actual.

The odometer under-reads by 2% so the consumption is slightly better than the calculated brim to brim figures.

Observations: the lowest consumption not surprisingly is in 6th gear - when new this meant not less than 60 mph but now the engine is loosening up it will take 6th at 50 mph. Driving around hilly rural roads in a 60 mph limit means mostly 4th and 5th and this gives 42-43 mpg.

For comparison purposes remember that the Scout is a 4X4 which knocks 7 mpg off the consumption of the 2-wheel drive cars according to the Government figures.

Nice little report.

I would concur with those findings. I drive around Kent, on the M25 and in London and it averages 42 to 51mpg. Not too bad for a substantial vehicle with 4x4 capabilities. Even towing a caravan & with bikes & kayaks on the roof when fairly new it achieved 35mpg.
