Scout report

A quick resume of 6000 miles in a Scout 140 Tdi. Performance - all the torque you'll ever need, goes everywhere 1 gear higher than my old 90 bhp Mk 1 and overtaking is a doddle but you never get something for nothing so fuel consumption is much higher at 43 mpg (with climate control on - I rarely used the aircon on the Mk 1). Engine becoming more flexible with mileage - will pull from 1500 rpm now. Handling is superb - it doesn't drift wide at all on bends, in fact the only limitations are the speed limit and being able to stop in the distance I can see to be clear. Ride - excellent on good roads and at a decent speed on less good roads but a bit joggly at slow speeds on rough roads (though no worse than my Mk 1 which banged abd crashed unlike the Scout which is really solid). Takes speed humps much better than the Mk 1. Seats really good and interior well put together. Goes in the garage with the mirrors extended (just). The lights are a pain - coming on in the garage and /or in the dark when the car is unlocked - I will get this feature disabled when it eventually goes for a service. Wiper blades are already not cleaning the screen properly. Visibility to the left at junctions is difficult with a passenger. Brakes are really good. Trip computer over-estimates fuel usage by 9.5%. Cruise control is a boon but you have to be careful not to engage it in too high a gear as it then doesn't hold the required speed downhill. Running for a long time in a 30 mph limit in 4th causes the engine to start fluffing - this is cured by changing down and using a bit more throttle (I wonder if the particulate filter starts to clog though the warning isn't displayed).

In conclusion: very impressive car with only a few minor niggles. Worth £20K - as long as it keeps going like it has so far! :)

Good post.

What colour did you go for? Any pictures?

3000 miles into my Scout experience I agree with most of that. Quite annoying driving at 30. I find myself swapping betwwen 3rd and 4th to keep going. Feels like that there is still a lot of loosening up left to do.

Brakes are great and handling good too albeit jiggly at low speed. Of course if you've got Maixdot you could change how long the lights stop on for.

Economy varies between 43ish upto 51 on a run.

I do have a slight issue with the clutch/gearbox. With the engine idling there is a loud tapping noise that goes away when you put the clutch down. Haven't worried about it until now as I thought things were just bedding in, but think it is getting harder to get into first gear. Anyone else had this?

Interesting your comment on first gear, mine is quite notchy at times, and difficult to get into gear. As I have only done 2000 miles I thought I would leave it for a bit & see if it was just 'newness'. I suspect not now.

Interestingly, my mid 70's Fords were much smoother through all the gears than many new cars!

As for the lights, I think if you turn of the auto-lights feature it does not turn the lights on or off when opening or locking the car.

you can turn of the comfort headlight feature in the maxidot setup menu
