Anyone know of any scrapped 4motion TDIs?

Featured Replies

you'd either have a very high rear end or no wheel well jason, quite simply the diff has to go somewhere. on the octavia the 4x4 loses about 3" of its depth in the boot, on the "normal" estates there is a false floor to hide stuff in but the 4x4 doesn't have this as they had to gain room for the rear diff.

you would also need different rear suspension simply as you would have different rear hubs and knuckles to accomodate the fact that there are dirve shafts there, i'm not sure how different the rear suspension setup is on the 4x4 compared to teh FWD cars, i cannot remember if the 4x4 has trailing arms off the top of my head but the 4x4 has independant rear suspension where the FWD's run a solid rear beam.

There'd be a lot of cutting and fabricating to do for sure.

Best bet would be to get something like a quattro TT complete from a breakers.

Or just buy a 4wd golf and be done with it

Good thoughts on the suspension. I assume I would have to use some kind of octy 4x4 / 4wd VW type coilovers on the back.... Or the stock suspension. If I was lucky, the tops of the struts would bolt to the same place as the fabia ones do. The chap in CZ had certainly managed something, but he had air ride, with a compressor, etc.

= you ain't stopping me, guys :D

twin engine, twin engine, twin engine!!!!!!

DO IT YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE

J its nowt to do with the actual dampers or springs. its the fact that RWD doesnt work with a beam axle, you would need an independant set up like the back of the 4Mo. As mentioned a while ago to convert a MK4 Golf to 4Mo properly costs around £10k if you buy all the bits to do it as factory.

HPA Motorsports Inc. / AWD Conversions

despite it's sh*tness, couldn't he deploy some sort of live axle type affair?

if you do decide to do it jason, make sure you get the gearbox and rear diff from the same donor car, because there are lots of diffs floating about with different final drive ratios, and the front and rear need to have the same ratios for obvious reasons...

it's gonna cost you:D!!!

Ooooh, I know it will cost - which is probably why I'll at least wait until I'm part qualified, and earning a bit more moolah. I'm thinking now of trying to get the octy 4x4 rear end instead. Makes more sense to keep it all Skoda - yet the chap in CZ definitely had an Octy gearbox with 4mo rear diff, so they must be compatible. I bet I will also need the front end - perhaps hubs, consoles, swingarms - If I'm dead jammy the Fabia vRS driveshafts will bolt up to the 4x4 gearbox? The guy had moved the fabia engine a good 3" toward the nearside on custom mounts, so there's clearly some serious work involved to get it to work....

Subaru Justy centre and rear diff ;) Cheap as chips, totally mechanical and no VAG-COM tom foolery to worry about.

isn't the Octavia 4x4 stuff the same as the Golf 4motion stuff

Seems so, as this chap had 4mo back end, octy drivetrain up front. Would be easier to get hold of the whole car though, if I only needed octy stuff.

From what I can tell, there was no PD130 4x4 produced. Only the 105bhp 1.9 PD, which came with a manual 5 speed. This guy definitely had a 6 speed 4wd gearbox up front, so not sure where this came from. I'm beginning to think now it could have come from a 1.8T 4x4 octavia now - And as Steviewonder fitted the ASZ gearbox to his vRS, it sounds like they are compatible gearboxes - but the ratios might be a bit fooked up using a petrol box on a TDI.... Probably limits top speed to around 120mph I suspect.

If this is the case, I might look into getting 4wd into some other car and leave mine in 2wd longer ratio mode....

1.8T 4x4 Octavia is 5 speed, 6 speed 4wd box would be from an S3 or a TT(?)

But why do you want 6 speeds? Just because you think you need them?

The final drive ratio on the TT box is the same as the 5 speed box so you just spend more time changing gear for little gain (in a remapped high torque car)

Jason

What about the TT, there are quite a few of those in the breakers & costs arent that silly, 2 years ago I was quoted £1100 for a complete TT transmission from quite a new car, ie flywheel all the way through to the wheels. They apparently rerely break therefore the s/hand value is very low, now isnt that just such a shame !!

So, you're saying take the TT box - bolt it to my ASZ engine, and use the TT prop, all 4 driveshafts, and complete back end? Sounds interesting. :D

might need some custom prop work done

Bit more than interesting, want to see some pictures of the work involved

Nothing Jason cant' manage with a junior hack saw and some cable ties though

the 6 speed box is a million times stronger than the 5 speed Phil, i have broken 2 5 speeds now, Stuart has broken a couple and the FWD boys are breaking them, the 6 speed is way stronger and thats why i've got one, nothing to do with gear ratio's.

Jason, get a complete TT setup but you'll have to get the box rebuilt with your current ratio's in it as they will be way to short for a diesel car, it would only be geared for about 100mph!!

ooh, yes! :)

seeing as we've got a slightly broken fabia on our drive at the moment, i'm getting the impression that zip ties/gaffer tape isn't so much a "jason" thing, but rather a "fabia" thing :D

I've seen some of the work involved, in the flesh at a carshow. :D Although I didn't get a massive look at it from underneath, I'm under no illusions there will be chassis cutting away involved, along with a degree of fabrication to get the alien rear end to bolt on to the fabia chassis.

Do you think the TDI drive ratios can be fitted into the housing of a TT?

they are the same gearbox J but with different ratio's.

using the gear from an audi a3 tdi quatrro is probably a better bet :D
