Awful problems with Ice Link Plus + new iPod Classic and Symphony HU.

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

Wondering if you could help me.

My new 80Gb iPod classic arrived this morning and at the same time I had my Ice Link Plus fitted by Skoda. Its the usual standard Symphony Head Unit in my Fabia vRS.

Now I have checked all around the website and on Google but I cannot seem to find anything that helps me.

I am finding it impossible getting into the iPod menu where you press 6. All the happens is either nothing, or a little hour-glass appears on the display of my iPod. I want to get into the menu so I can select the mode that allows me to control the iPod from the actual iPod interface not the Headunit interface.

I have been pulling my hair out all morning trying to get it to play ball but no luck at all. Its so frustrating. :(

I'm just wondered if anybody has any help or ideas?

Thanks very much in advance.

Dan.

Sounds to me like the interface is not grounded to the radio.

Connect the brown wire directly to the radio chassis.

Have you tried an older model iPod with the unit?

Cheers for the replies people. :)

With respect to VRStus reply; I'd guess Skoda would have done that? If the brown cable was not connected would the unit fail to operate at all? I mean 1-5 operates the first 5 playlists respectivly but pressing 6 just buggers it all up.

And Mattbeef I was thinking that, I will try and obtain a friends iPod tomorrow and see if that works. Maybe the new 6th Gen iPod isnt compatible with it. :(

i fitted one for somone a few weeks back and grounded it on the car chassis. It had similar symptoms, logo on the ipod but wouldn't do anything. Moved the brown ground to the radio chassis and all is well.

Problem is there isn't any instructions in the kit.

I lied it's black -

Did the garage fit an 'Ice Link' or a Skoda iPod kit?

I know it sounds a stupid question, but each do different things on button 6.

'Ice link' ---- iPod menu

'skoda kit' ---- all track on the iPod

either way, you'd expect something would work

if you've got an 'Ice Link', maybe the new iPod are programmed differently. Maybe worth trying an older iPod like Matt suggested

Sounds Dan's got an Ice Link if he's got 1-5 as playlists (unless the Skoda kit does the same in which case ignore me :) ).

Hmm struth Tim; I wasnt aware a Skoda Kit existed - they gave me a photocopied manual which had IceLink Plus - VW Group on the front of it. And my invoice had Dension on it at a price of £99.99 VAT included.

Just re-read the instructions and it indeed says its made by Dension so I guess its legit. The other thing is; the manual says for all iPods past 3rd Generation it will give a warning on Boot Up saying "Do not operate whilst driving...etc...". Mine doesnt do anything like that; it just comes up with the Dension logo. I must admit I would be very inclined to say that my new 6th Generation iPod is not compatible with the cable. :thumbdwn:

Yep, you've definitely got a dension ice link (skoda / vw ones come up with a VW symbols when connected).

As to why button 6 doesn't bring up the menu, I've no idea. Must be the new iPod's are not fully compatible - however worth checking with older gen iPod to see what happens.

Keep us informed, and good luck :)

Apple have changed the way that the iPods library file works hence why people cant use third party applications at the moment.

That might be why?

Ahh what the hell. So I'm guessing my Ice-Link is pretty much useless for the moment?

Unless you swap your new one with my 3rd gen 20gb free of charge.

Nah, he doesn't want to do that... not when he can swap with my 4th gen 60gb Photo :P

The one I saw recently came from a Skoda dealer but it wasn't a VAG part. It was supplied buy a company in london somewhere.

tbh id honestly try an older version iPod because my new iPod Touch :D

works with my Apline headunit as does my 5th gen

Sell the ice link and buy a connects2.

Righto. Tried a friends older iPod and its works a charm so yup sadly 6th Gen iPods don't yet work with the Ice Link. Looks like I'l have to get back in contact with Skoda tomorrow and get it removed. Argh I hate doing that.

hey atleast you found out the answer.

plus you will save someone else the headache

True but despite Skoda refunding me the £100 for the adapter I doubt they will refund me the £40 labour to fit it. Knowing them they will charge me another £40 to remove it.

Maybe I should do it myself and sell it myself on ebay.

if you have the removal keys or something suitable then go for it as its not a hard job to do

Whereabouts are you?

Steve

Good thread this, I was about to purchase a 160gig ipod as my 60gig is full to the brim, but looks like I'll have to hold off for a bit... Hopefully dension will release a firmware update or something asap!

  • 4 months later...

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but Dension recently released new firmware for ice>link plus products that allows the newer ipods to function properly. Just thought I'd let people know in case they weren't aware!

Result!
