Cupra console bush fitting help!

Featured Replies

Nice to know they know what they are doing then.

not a good situation rum4mo, get it back to the garage ASAP

just for your info , when i fitted the complete Cupra consoles to my VRS , i found that the bushes sit proud of the rear face by about 1-2mm , so you could say both of your bushes are fitted incorrectly

Interesting as thats not how I have fitted them. But the forward position of the arm cannot alter due to the front mounting. So as long as the rear peg is located and the bush is the right way around it should be just fine.

I'm quessing that the position I stated for the N/S - ie approx rubber approx 1mm recessed is correct as that means the outer aluminium sleeve is flush with the rear face of the console. What I was meaning about the small front bush was that usually the TCA pin is located in the large bush with fore/aft clearance at the rear of the pin - on my O/S one the front face of the large bush looks like it is jammed or slightly compressed against the round section of the TCA. So where as the normal state of things is that the front bush fixes the fore/aft position of the TCA, on my O/S it is being loaded forward a bit by the pressure of the beefy Cupra bush front face being too far forward. Just a hunch or an excuse for the groaning noises.

yes thanks, I was gonna use summat water-based like fairy liquid or K-Y as oils and grease can be acidic as well as allowing the whole bush to torque afterwards....

Basil, I've just bought a new Cupra bush to give to my VAG indep so that he does not try to salvage the "reversed bush", when I ordered it I was offered lub as well - so said yes, the p/n for a 100ml bottle is G294421A1 and its costs £6.86 + vat.

Whoops, I had not checked the "ask a tech" forum - so you know most of this already!

Right I've been back to my VAG indep today to get the O/S TCA rear Cupra bush that was fitted in reverse replaced by a new one that I'd supplied. I left the bottle of assembling lubricant in the car - but he seems to have used "goldish" coloured lubricant this time - ie Copaslip or Copper-ease. But at least the new bush is fitted the correct way this time. Quote, "these bushes can be fitted either way, it was just that it was pushed too far into the console so was touching the body of the TCA" - I don't thing that is correct, Lummox pointed out a long time ago which way round they were meant to go, the strange thing is, when I booked the car in they said "can't be fitted in the wrong way round as only one side has a lead-in" - yes, on my O/S the lead-in for the TCA hex section was facing the rear - so it was not helping the refitting of the TCA! Now no rubbery noises - great!

From what I've read - using any sort of unapproved grease or oil is a no-no. They leave an acidic residue that can degrade the bush with time, and in extreme cases can allow the whole bush to rotate in the console.

Yes not ideal, the surface on the aluminium outer sleeve is rough - lots of flatish areas - and is as such an interferance fit into the aluminium console, this together with the load required to fit it into the console more or less guarantees that it will not rotate. Remember aluminium turning against aluminium is never going to happen "a lot" as it is not self lubricating - each side will just "pick-up" and seize. As for the Copaslip or any other normal grease causing problems, I've been using WD40 and antiseize pastes (together) with aluminium jigs and tables for years in enviromental test chambers with no degradation to the aluminium - its being used mainly to hold back corrosion on the high strength fixing bolts (Holochrome). Also as the aluminium sleeve runs the full length of the bush, any contamination of the "rubber" by the grease is easily removed and will not cause any long term issues with the bush - its not as though the rubber is being regularly lubricated with grease - it looks like the TCA pin was either fitted in "dry" or maybe that is the only area that needs the special assembly lubricant as the pin passes through the rubber - but even that area seems to be beefed up with an inner metal hex sleeve.
