Steering wheel wobble left to right

Featured Replies

Had a curious wobble of the steering wheel on my last journey. It started *very* noticeably moved left to right when doing around 50mph at the time and did so for maybe 5 minutes, then stopped. Now it seems to move in this manner very slightly but just about noticeable when looking for it.

The tyres were done not long ago and balanced. I will check the wheel bolt torque again (could be a good time to swap fronts with rears anyway).

If it's none of the above, and not a consequence of the wind/road surface, the only thing that comes to mind is the front wheel bearings.

Edit: forgot to point out it is a to and fro movement (not wandering to one side)

Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Tyre pressures. Check your front tyre pressures. Almost certainly grossly over-inflated. Check them with a guage someplace else from where you had the tyres 'done' and balanced - they may have a faulty guage.

Wheel Bearing?

Cv joint nipping up, see if they need re-greasing.

Check tyre pressures properly with cold tyres. A BSI calibrated guage is only about a fiver from an accessory shop. Add a pump, and you're still looking at under £20, or about 2 years worth of forecourt checks.

My BSI guage is about 45 years old, and a footpump lasts 5 to 10 years.
