unusual tyre wear..... ESP's fault?

Featured Replies

ok, I don't really have a problem, but I'm gonna need new front tyres soon, and I've noticed the inside edge worn.... now not as you might imagine from that description,,, but at a (45 degree) is angle to the main tread, about half a centimeter on the inside edge, I thought it could be the way ESP may deal with understeer, i.e pulling the brake on the front inside tyre when its really unloaded during heavy cornering..... (i.e. on the patch thats worn.....)

its not excessive, but noticable...... there are no worrying symptoms, car handles fine , tracks straight, no vibrations ect ect....

ideas?

Dont corner so hard :P

It's just a crap car Dave:D

It may look nice and not have broken down yet, but the Italians are crafty, they have designed a car that will eat your wallet by stealth:P

I am lying in wait ;)

Both tyres ?

Or is it just the side you're sat on :D

I would have thought that amount of wear would need the ESP to have been on an awful lot i.e. am not coming anywhere near you on the roads. :P

new acronym for FIAT..... Fred its ate Tyres....

it might drive straight , but that doesn't necessarily mean the tracking is correct or to spec , get it checked ASAP

are they Dunlop tyres ?

no they're bridgstone potenza's (XL) ...... and it's both sides (nearside and offside wheels... just the inside edge of the tyre) ..... I'd read about someone elses GPS having this trait too... they took it to the dealers, and ended up having all sorts of things replaced (steering rack suspension ect) and still it does it....

I'm wondering if its just a trait... it's not excessive, i.e. it doesn't prematurely shorten the life of the tyres.....

I'm having it serviced next week (18k already!) and I'll mention it... but if they say "I can't find anything wrong" I don't think I'm gonna let them set about replacing everything in the hope of finding it........ the tyres are just about done... (18k isn't bad)

as per original post, I just wondered if anyone else who has an ESP equipped car, and likes the odd "brisk" drive, has noticed similar wear? ....

Is there any sign of the inside edges forming scrub wedges (leading or trailing wedges)?

FIAT= F--- Its Another Tit

no, they're not scrubbing, I am familiar with what that looks like..........

*stoically ignores smstext's abuse :P

You must have stoicism, Dave, to have ......

fiat fi¢at, or (Latin) fe¢ät,

noun a formal or solemn command

unless you were under fiat from someone

the reason i asked whether they were Dunlops , was that when i had Dunlops on the Fabia i had the same issues ,and it was only luck that i noticed that the tyres had worn like that , never had the problem with the original Michs or the Toyos fitted now

no ESP on the Fabia

i would try a different tyre brand and see what happens

cheers for that, first constructive point i think ;)

You could always try turning the ESP off every time you get in it and see if you get the same behaviour ;)

Chris

After suitable admonishment (thanks, Dave) did some Googleing and can find no mention of excessive tyre wear on Puntos (ESP or not).

Found a few mentions that linked back to Brisky and some nerd with a 170  bhp grande Punto :P

I seem to remember Ken O'Neill mentioning Dunlops were prone to this (aside from his entry in this thread).....

TBH I don't think Dunlop have got their act straight i.e. are behind the times. From what I read of them in general I wouldn't have them - and have avoided them for absolute years.

My comment about Dunlops referred to general wear rate, not something localised as in Sharkrider's OP.

Speaking of which, I was thinking in terms of inside edge scrub as being the most likely effect of ESP activation I thought, ok mate?
