How to get the towbar off?

Featured Replies

Hi!

I got my -05 Octavia 1,9 TDI 4x4 Estate yesterday and can't manage to get the towbar off. Original towbar and the key fit. I need instructions om how this thing works - how to get it off and how to fit?

please.....

Sorry no idea. I went for a fixed bracket. Maybe better trying on one of the caravanning forums.

Do you have detachable towball? Is it the towball you wish to remove or are you trying to remove all of the metal work - the whole towbar?

If towball you need to know the make of it. I can help if it is a Westfalia.

Sorry had a fixed bar on mine.

I have a detachable towbar. I put the key in & turn it, then push the lever back towards the car (it is fairly tight) and the towbar then falls out. The instructions do make it very clear never to get the mechanism dirty or you could have problems installing the ball in. If yours has not been removed for a while it might also be logical to assume the reverse happens and it gets stuck in.

Does the mechanism seem to handle any force? I dont know when the towball was removed, but think it has been on there for a while.

It would have been nice to get the instructions/drawings if anyone can post them. It's still stuck...

I was out trying to force it using my leg now - didn't move a bitt... Added some oil earlier today, doesn't seem to help.

Just a suggestion - spray liberally with WD40, more oil. Leave some hours and then tap all around i.e. all angles with rubber headed mallet. Extended soak / penetration and gentle persuasion might just free something off.

Just in case your towball is not a Skoda. With my Westfalia you turn the key then pull the kn0b (that the key is in) outwards (away from the towball). It is then possible to turn the kn0b and then the towball drops out.

I got it off!!

The "how does it work..." from "Captain Kremen" with suggestion from "anonymouse" the towball is loose. Didn't use too much force either:D

Thanx a lot everybody!
