Smoke/oil usage 140 DSG

Featured Replies

Now done 9000 miles in my 140 DSG Octy and am somewhat concerned by amount of smoke, darkish coloured and very obvious when putting foot down and lighter even when say accelerating away more normally. Also how much oil should they use. Light came on at 6000 miles ad topped up with 1L of castrol diesel synthetic from local filling station. Car seems to be running well and did 49mpg on 470 mile trip to Scotland yesterday.

Used about 1L of oil in 10'000 miles which I would say is pretty normal.

I think most diesels smoke, but if you are worried you can always ask your dealer to check it out for you.

Without wishing to scaremonger, I have heard that if the oil pressure light's come on, it may already be too late... :(

Do they not have a yellow pre-warning light come on when running low? The golf lets me know when its just touching the bottom of the marker.

Smoke and oil usage is very much normal. I get LOADs of smoke from cold. Smoke is handy for annoying tailgaters :)

TBH the cars I used to service myself usually usedto add between half and one litre between oil changes which were at 5-6k intervals.

If you hadn't checked the oil and then the orange light came on and you stopped quickly and topped up I don't see an issue. As somebody else said the orange light is low level not low pressure.

I get no smoke from mine.

They use a lot of oil during the first 20K miles, just keep an eye on the level. The manual states the level should be checked weekly or before a long journey for this reason.

I hope the oil you used to topup is the correct VW rating, otherwise you will have issues with the variable service indication if your car is on variable.

The car has a low oil warning, thats separate from the low oil pressure warning.

Mine smokes a lot, and its really obvious when giving it some beans, the non 4x4 140tdi engine does not have a DPF (thank god), hence the smoke.

As Mannyo said they smoke a lot when you boot 'em. All VAG's do - golfs, passats A3's etc. See loads on the motorway smoking away.

PD engines have always smoked a lot. My 2 previous PD's smoked nicely and as mentioned before you'll always see an Audi/SEAT/VW/Skoda puffing away.

Drive it like an OAP for about 25 miles then spank the **** out of it up a nice long hill, then you'll see some proper smoke!

And if you think your normal PD smokes badly, try strapping a tuning box to it, people behind you will think it's running on coal.

front fog lights required then.

PD160 intake and a fresh filter sorted me right out!

I can sometimes hear myself coughing in sympathy for the driver behind me when I put my foot down. Obviously he isn't behind me for long!

And it uses a lot of oil. Nearly finished my second 4 litre bottle after driving 47,000 miles.
