Whining gearbox

Featured Replies

Fab vRs, 18 months old, 13K miles.

Higher in pitch when speed increases, stays when the box is in neutral or wthe clutch is down.

Sounds like an old mini.

Warrantee methinks

Not unheard of, but a bit low on miles for that tbh. You had it re-mapped by any chance....not that you'd be wise admitting that on here on 2nd thoughts.:D

Gearbox does seem to be a weak spot on some vRS's.

Defo warranty claim I'd say. Sounds like a bearings problem.

gearbox is usually absolutly bulletproof no matter what power runs through it,warenty job for sure

Have read of a few similar cases in here, and my mate had to have his rebuilt as it was so whiny. It WAS knackered apparently, but all done on warranty. Had first gear selection problems when cold after that.

Get it checked out! I know its not the same model of car nor related in anyway but my Octavia gearbox whined, then 5th gear popped!

Luckily mine is being done under warranty, well it is when Volkswagen send the parts from Germany!

The car is mechanically standard.

Booked in a week on wednesday.

We had a similar thing on a 1.9 TD Fabia, Skoda insisted that the box be stripped and rebuilt which it was and it still whined, eventually after some weeks we got a new box fitted.

This was when we were told that it was Skodas policy to repair rather than replace as opposed to VWs policy of replacing.

Mine has a whine, but not excessive....tends to do it in 2nd 3rd & 4th, when your going through a speed zone, ie 20, 30 40 mph....

But i was told by our service manager, who took it for a run out, that with them having an extra gear they do whine a bit...

You can play it with the throttle though....

It doesnt do it when in neutral, or when clutch is depressed either...

Sounda like a bit of a 'cop out' to me that tbh.

P'raps someone with specific Skoda mechanical knowledge would care to comment?

I work for a dealer by the way, and its not a cop out as three others do it on the forecourt...!

I was pointing it out as a guide for the original poster, to see if it compaired.

Well my best mate who's got an 28 month old Fabia Vrs with 45k on the clock doesn't whine in any gear. I know as I've driven it. Quiet as a mouse.

Looks like your service dept is going to busy fixing 3 whining gearboxes in the future p'raps?

No, i dont think so....

Its not a definitive whine, not like aknackered box noise, just so slight, its hardly noticeable.

Anyway, ill believe them, its under warranty anyways, so even if it does...expire....jobs a good un!
