Noise when windows open

Featured Replies

Hi,

This has probably been asked before so apologies - I'm struggling to find anything via the search function.

I have a Petrol Octy VRs. When the windows are open (especially the rear) I get loads of wind noise. It's hard to describe but its like a 'pulsing' effect and starts over 40mph getting progressively worse.

Had the car in at the dealers today (to fix the rear wash wipe :)) and they said it was a 'feature' of the car. Anyone else get this before I ask to go out in one of their cars to hear this 'feature' on another car.

Cheers

It's called "buffeting". It's where the high speed air going past the car tries to drag the air from inside the car creating low pressure hence the noise. There's not much you can do apart from open two windows to try and equalise things. The noise isn't so bad if the window is partially open. Mine does it too if it makes you feel any better

Sunroofs on older cars are notorious for it.

Yes I have this too and on my Old version Octavia as well. As you say apparent with the rear windows open. I rarely put those windows down anyway as kids travel in back and I disable them. I just use aircon as needed.

yup ive got this too in the new fabia and roomster. but its even worse in my 99 vectra estate. putting the rear window down at speed in that makes your head explode!! :D

Cheers Guys...never noticed it when I bought the car and it hasn't done it in other cars I have owned.

It is a weird effect; one that is worse when the rear windows are partially down. It is disappointing as I prefer to drive in warm days ith the rear window slightly down to cool and get air movement. Air con can’t get the air movement.. But there is a simple work-around. I drive with the nearside rear window down; and if you open the front very slightly (15mm ish); this stops the air drumming

Be crefull, the buffeting can damage your hearing over time.

Also if you have had a replacement window recently (front, rear and estate rear side windows), avoid this buffeting as these windows are are glued in and the glass can pop-out until the sealant has cured.

Autoglass bloke told me that one:)

Well it's true that you learn something new everyday. Some great advice that about the window.

Has been the same buffeting in the cars I've driven. And as has already been said have another window slightly open, will help the symptom.

Mine does it too, but it is not a 'feature' of the Octavia. My previous car, a Peugeot also did it.

I've always opened the rear windows in my cars by 1 - 2 inches to reduce the buffeting when having one or both front windows open more than half, particularly with no air-con to cool down with in the summer.

Opening the rear windows only, more than a third or so, often gives buffeting.

I have notice though that the Octy is particularly bad for buffeting with only the rear windows open.

It's all down to the aerodynamics!!

makes you think you're driving a helicopter... :)

Had my test drive on a really hot day (the one we had earlier this year!)

Sales guy sat in the back and opened his window. I drove away and at 30mph or so I thought the exhaust had dropped off and my eardrums were going to burst!

I stopped the car and looked at the sales guy who had closed the window and was looking VERY sheepish - "errrmm.... they all do that sir!"

Didn't stop me buying it though - I just make sure that I have a front window down an inch or so and it stops it completely.

Other cars I have driven have done the same thing but never anywhere near as bad as the Octavia!

... yup - a Chinook at that !!

my focus used to do it too

All my previous cars did this - inc, Civic, Vectras and Cavaliers
